Brookland Works building outside metro

Lots of good news continuing for Brookland this week. First Barnes and Noble confirmed leasing 14,000 square feet of the Cornerstone building with Catholic University on Monroe Street between Michigan Avenue and 7 Street, NE. And last week we learned Analog, “handmade and vintage shop” opened in the Arts Walk. Now comes more good news for the Arts Walk.

At the corner of 8th and Monroe St, NE – Meridian Pint and Smoke and Barrel owner John Andrade, has signed a lease for 4,200 square feet in the Brookland Works building, right outside the metro. They hope to open late spring/early Summer of 2014. While this, still to be named, restaurant will have a serious craft beer program – it will also feature a broader beverage program to include cocktails and wine. The 4,200 square foot space will have room for 120 inside and 48 on the outdoor patio. Lots more updates as construction progress and more details are known.

“Dear PoPville,

I happened to read about this scam on Frozen Tropics the other day. Then tonight this woman showed up at my house in Brookland (2900 block of 10th St NE). So she’s certainly not sticking to the H St. area. Same description (She is an African American women, probably in her forties or fifties. She is around 5′ to 5′ 3″. She had her hair braided and pulled back into a ponytail. She wasn’t wearing glasses or any makeup) and a similar story, but this time it was someone who had lived on my block, but had been killed at the Family Dollar. Since I had just read the FT post, I simply told her no, but I wanted to send word your way since she’s apparently not isolated to the H St area anymore and may be headed elsewhere in the city.”

From a press release:

“The owners of Analog, a handmade and vintage shop, are pleased to announce the store’s grand opening on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from noon to 7 p.m. Analog, located at the new Monroe Street Market at Brookland Metro, features handmade stationery and paper craft items from Craftgasm alongside vintage clothing and accessories from Beltway Vintage, formerly known as Quarter Life.

Owners Melissa Esposito of Craftgasm and Lisa Rowan of Beltway Vintage are pleased to welcome shoppers who might have visited them at local markets and events throughout the Washington, D.C. region over the past few years. Their studio/shop space at Monroe Street Market provides space for Esposito to make art prints using recycled paper goods and for Rowan to design accessories from reclaimed fabric.

“Alongside our products and work space, we’ll have room to invite visitors into the shop for events and workshops,” Esposito explained. Esposito is planning mail-art and letter-writing workshops, while Rowan envisions vintage-themed socials and fashion history discussions.

Analog’s owners are thrilled to be a part of the Monroe Street Market community. “Each day we meet another artist who will be joining us,” Rowan said, “and each day we’re blown away not just by the talent that’s being collected here, but by the kindness and sense of community we’re feeling right away.”

From WMATA:

“Metro is advising Red Line riders of a major service disruption that will impact service Friday, August 30, due to an overnight derailment of a non-revenue train between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations.

Service Information

There is no Red Line train service between Fort Totten and NoMa-Gallaudet stations until further notice. Customers are advised to avoid the eastern side of the Red Line if possible.
• Riders may experience longer waits for trains and increased crowding on the Red Line today.
• Between Shady Grove and NoMa-Gallaudet, trains will operate every 5 to 10 minutes during the morning rush hour.
• Between Glenmont and Fort Totten, trains will operate every 10 to 15 minutes during the morning rush hour.
• Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Green Line as an alternate route between Fort Totten and Gallery Place (Downtown DC). Passengers arriving via Red Line trains at Fort Totten should transfer to Green Line trains on the lower level.
• Limited shuttle bus service will be available between Fort Totten, Brookland, Rhode Island Ave and NoMa-Gallaudet stations. Passengers using shuttle bus service should expect significantly longer travel times.
• Regular route Metrobus service may be an option for some riders. To check, use Metro’s Trip Planner and select the “bus only” option.

The derailment occurred around midnight as the system was closing. The train involved was being moved from one rail yard to another. It was not carrying passengers, and there were no injuries.

The incident caused damage to track equipment in the area of Rhode Island Station, including the third rail, signal cables and track components.

Metro personnel are working to restore normal service as quickly and safely as possible. However, at this time there is no estimate on when normal service will be restored. The area where the derailment occurred is scheduled to be out of service starting at 10 p.m. Friday, through the Labor Day weekend, for rebuilding work.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.”

brookland

Earlier in the week it was learned that ANC 5B03 had become vacant. This seat was held by Tiffany Bridge and represented a section of Brookland. She briefly explained to the Brookland listserv why she decided to step down. It is among the more depressing posts I’ve ever read:

The seat has come open because I have chosen to step down.

The short version is, I have different ideas from the other commissioners about what, at a practical level, constitutes openness and transparency in local government. Which wouldn’t be a problem by itself (we’re all accountable at the ballot box for the kind of elected official we are, after all, and I don’t believe in telling other elected officials how to represent their districts), but the practical upshot had turned out to be: a lawsuit filed against the ANC for failing to honor a FOIA request, to which I am a party simply because I was on the ANC at the time; my subsequent lack of confidence that I wouldn’t get dragged into those kinds of shenanigans in the future by continuing to be part of that body; and personal abusiveness leveled at me from other commissioners because of my belief that our constituents are entitled to know what we’re up to and why.

I’m sorry to not complete my term- I hate being a quitter more than almost anything- but I could no longer ignore that being confident in the principles guiding my own behavior wasn’t going to be enough to keep me from getting dragged into nonsense I don’t want to be associated with.

So I’ve decided this isn’t something I can continue with. I will continue to look for other ways to serve the Brookland community that are more appropriate for me and look forward to seeing you all out and about at neighborhood events. In the meantime, I’d be happy to discuss ANC service with anyone who is interested in running for this seat.

Shared on the Brookland listserv from MPD:

“I promised you that I would get back with you in reference to an incident that took place at the Yes! Organic Market (3809 12th St. NE) last Sunday, July 14, 2013. At approximately 12:49 pm, a “flash mob” of about 10 juveniles stormed the market, vandalized and stole items within. When approached by the manager, he was threatened to have his “head bashed in.” The juveniles fled the location south on 12th Street, making good their escape. They were not apprehended and no one was hurt.”

Brookland is blowing up. There really is no debate anymore – it is. I’ve heard tons of scuttlebutt over the past few months and many from folks in the know with a high degree of certainty. One of the most exciting is that Whole Foods is apparently pretty much a done deal. If half of the scuttlebutt I’ve heard is true, I’d expect many more (big and small) announcements about Brookland in the near future too…

Yesterday we learned that Bloomingdale’s Rustik would be opening a second location in Brookland.

Owner Diton Pashaj updates us on the plans:

“The new location will NOT serve pizza. It will be heavily influenced in Mediterranean Cuisine but of course will include some traditional American dishes and favorites.”

Diton also shares that the new spot will likely be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ed. Note: Yesterday some readers expressed concern that Brookland’s pizza scene was already well served by Menomale and an upcoming &Pizza.
