“SUMO STEW (#SUMOSTEW) takes its show on the road for it’s ninth round, to be held in Washington, DC, at Right Proper Brewery’s Production House + Tasting Room in Brookland (920 Girard St NE). Inspired by a trip to Japan, photographer Michael Harlan Turkell (harlanturk.com) returned to Brooklyn, NY with aspirations of importing this ancient sport, and teamed up with Harry Rosenblum, owner of The Brooklyn Kitchen (thebrooklynkitchen.com), a wonderfully multi-faceted cooking store and center for culinary education. The two created a series based around plentiful bowls of chankonabe, the “sumo stew” wrestlers prepare and eat before matches. The hearty broth is loaded with fortifying protein and vegetables. This, paired with a live stream from Japan of the bimonthly grand tournaments, makes for a lively event, which brings hungry first time and long-standing sumo fans ringside.
This round of SUMO STEW will feature a miso sesame dashi based chankonabe with tsukune (chicken and pork meatballs), shrimp, salmon, Napa cabbage, and mushrooms, made by Chef Yo Matsuzaki of Zentan, (zentanrestaurant.com) in the Kimpton Donovan Hotel.

“Dear PoPville,
Last November, I saw a posting on your blog for new townhome style condos in Brookland being developed by Lock7. Shortly after, I took a trip to the Brooks Row construction site and visited Urban Pace’s sales office. By the end of the month, I had a ratified contract. One of the conditions was for my then-current condo to be under contract to be sold by Feb. 15th (this was later pushed back to March 30th).
At the time, I was told construction would be completed “late March/early April,” which was consistent with your blog post: “…scheduled to deliver early next spring.” The major snow storms we had pushed completion until “mid-May.” On April 17th, they hosted an open house for only one of the 22 units. That day, purchasers were still being told the project would be completed by “mid-May,” despite the fact that even the home that was “finished” was in reality very far off from being done. Two days later, my realtor told me he heard form Urban Pace and construction was then pushed back to “early June.”
On May 20, after weeks of privately expressing concerns about the construction progress with my realtor, I finally emailed Urban Pace looking for answers as to why every time I went to the site it appeared as though nothing was being accomplished. In that email, I explained to Urban Pace that I had to be out of my condo (it was under contract) by June 30. They then blamed the record amounts of rain we received as an excuse. Early that month, my realtor and I toured my unit. At that time the target for completion was “end of July/early August.”
On July 1, I moved into a temporary apartment with my dog (Lock7 is subsidizing less than a quarter of the rent costs). That weekend, frustrated with the move and the living situation, I sent another email to Urban Pace. On July 5, the response was, “With regards to construction Lock 7 told me today it would be complete end of the month, potentially early August. We need C of O after that, so settlements hopefully should take place in August once we have the final permits.” (more…)

“I think I just heard at least 10 gunshots coming from the Franklin St and/or RIA Ave area. Its sounded very close. I don’t think it was fireworks. Very scary. Anyone else hear it?”
One resident responded confirming they also heard it and an additional resident wrote:
“My daughter and I had just rounded the corner of Franklin and 13th after going to the farmers market. We stopped on our porch because she had fallen asleep and minutes later we heard the shots on that corner–so close they had woken her up and she was crying. I grabbed her, abandoning our stroller and things, and went inside. I love our neighborhood but I have a hard time with the thought that she could have been killed by stray bullets on a nice afternoon walk.“

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic fatality that occurred in the 1300 block of Michigan Avenue, Northeast on Saturday, July 23, 2016.
At approximately 5:15 am, members of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene of a traffic accident involving a 2008 GMC Yukon Denali. A Mount Rainer law enforcement member was attempting to stop the vehicle close to the DC/Maryland border when it fled into the District of Columbia. The decedent operating the SUV travelled at a high rate of speed onto Eastern Avenue, NE and eventually onto Michigan Avenue, NE. The SUV crossed the intersection of 14th Street, NE when it swerved to the right side of the road, mounted the curb, and struck a tree. (more…)
