“Dear PoPville,

Some friends and I sort of kicked up the ruckus this week over Boundary Stone’s opposition to an increased in the tipped minimum wage. Many folks have covered it as if we think Boundary Stone treats their staff poorly and we’re out to get them, while nothing could be further from the truth. We’ve put together the below open letter:

Dear Owners and Staff of Boundary Stone:

First off, we want to thank you for being an anchor to the Bloomingdale community. Quite simply, we love what you guys are doing. As residents of Bloomingdale, Truxton Circle, Shaw, Logan Circle and other nearby neighborhoods, we have enjoyed being regular patrons of your establishment. We’ve never had a poor experience. Your food has always been tasty, your staff always friendly, your drinks always stiff. We have no reason to doubt your assertion that you pay your staff well, and yours is an example for other establishments to emulate.

We were disheartened to see your public opposition to an increase to the tipped minimum wage. We understand your employees are well taken care of. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case at all establishments. Tipped wage workers not receiving at least minimum wage is a problem that runs rampant in the service industry. Even among those who do receive the minimum wage, the average annual salary of a DC server is only $24,000 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is far too little to live on in a city with such a high cost of living.

Again, we understand that Boundary Stone workers are paid far better than this, but opposing an increase in the tipped minimum wage enables bad actors to treat their workers unfairly. But with multiple decades of service industry employment combined, we’re concerned. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what the status of the Tapas place [Costa Brava] is that is supposed to go up on 1st right next to Rustik? It has basically looked exactly like this for months with no apparent work being done. Any idea what’s going on?”

Looks like they were having some permitting problems. From Costa Brava’s facebook page on November 6th:

“Working hard on permits. Should be soon. Fingers crossed.”

Rustik has applied for some later hours at the corner of 1st and T St, NW. A liquor license amendment says the current hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 12 am, Friday and Saturday 11 am – 1am and the patio hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am – 11 pm.

They are hoping to extend those general hours to Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 1 am, Thursday and Friday 10 am – 2 am and the patio hours to Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 11 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am -12 am.

@DCPoliceDept tweeted:

“Shooting; 8:37pm ; 1st and Q St NE; No Lookout at this time.”

A resident on the Eckington listserve wrote MPD looking for more information:

“I called 911 at 8:29pm for shots fired at Lincoln Rd NE just north of R St NE tonight – police tape is now up. But MPD alert said shooting at 1st and Q NE at 8:37, but media reporting shooting at 1st and Q NW at 8:37 with injuries and a lookout for a grey Jeep Cherokee.”

Thanks to a twitter follower for sending word that the MPD tweet listed the wrong quadrant, it was actually in NW – they send a Washington Post article:

“A man was shot and seriously wounded Monday night in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. police said. A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.”

Update from MPD:

Last night at about 8:20 pm, there were reports of gunshots in the area near Lincoln Road and R Street, NE. Two men were struck by bullets. One went to a hospital on his own and we located the second man nearby. There was one event, but the confusion may exist because one of the men was found at a location separate from the original call.”

More good news for Bloomingdale – a new bar is coming to the long vacant space at 251 Florida Ave, NW. A liquor license posted out front says:

“New full service Tavern. Entertainment with DJ. Occupancy load is 85. Sidewalk Café.”

CityPaper reports it is from Bartenders Patrick Owens (Ripple), Owen Thomson (Bryan Voltaggio’s Range), and Ashley May (Velvet Lounge.)

Looks like potential for a great sidewalk cafe (the application says 35 seats):

This is located right next door to the spot coming from the folks behind 13th Street Meats – Meat & Foods. Looks like they’re getting close too – they’ve recently added “Fine Food & Beverage” above their front door:

I was fortunate to attend a tasting last night and this place is ridiculously good. This is a huge score for the neighborhood.

From a press release:

Revive On-The-Go (the dine-out arm of Revive Events and Catering in the Bloomingdale neighborhood) announces the launch of DCity Smokehouse. The highly sought-after eatery will serve up classic savory barbecue dishes with an artisan touch.

DCity Smokehouse will be led by young culinary talent Rob Sonderman who has a serious passion for barbecue and soul food. The recent (2009) Culinary Institute of America graduate got his start in dining and classic French restaurants in DC and Boston working for James Beard award winning chefs Jeff Buben of Bistro Bis, Vidalia and Woodward Table and Tony Maws of Craigie on Main in Cambridge. He also worked under recently certified Master Chef Robert Mancuso in Boston. As Sonderman’s last stint, the chef held the title of pit master at Hill Country Barbecue in Penn Quarter. Now in attempt to spread his culinary wings, Sonderman has partnered with Revive to launch DCity Smokehouse. His selection of barbecue dishes will pair nicely with Revive’s classic but fresh soul food and comfort food menu.

Follow up to our discussion earlier in teh week. From a press release:

“The Historic Preservation Review Board yesterday, after a hearing to review revisions to Vision McMillan Partner’s Plan for the McMillan Sand Filtration Site, voted unanimously to support advancement of the project. Board members were overwhelmingly positive in their responses to this most recent round of revisions, calling the plan a “very, very thoughtful and serious response to what we established,” (Maria Casarella) and referring to collaboration on the project as “very tangible and commendable.” (Rauzia Ally) The Vision McMillan Partners development team includes Trammell Crow Company, EYA and Jair Lynch Development Partners.

Anne Corbett, Project Director with Vision McMillan Partners said after the hearing: “This is a significant moment in our journey to create a unique place that honors this site’s rich history and creates opportunity and excitement for local residents. This is far from over, but our team will continue to work tirelessly with the community and the HPRB to deliver something that truly reflects the desires of surrounding communities. We are thrilled with the HPRB’s decision today and very thankful for all of the community members who came to show their support today.” (more…)

Back in July a reader asked about the old buses seen at the corner of Florida and R St, NW near Big Bear Cafe. I finally spoke with the folks at Fojol Bros and have learned more about their plans for Elastic Highways (@elastichighways “From the minds, muscles & mustaches of the fojol bros., two retrofitted buses on a cross-country journey to launch new mobile dining & tech experience in DC.”) which kicks off with a preview tonight at 202 Florida Ave, NW.

Cool Blue 3250

The buses from the lot in the top photo have been removed. They will be bringing Cool Blue 3250 tonight at 5pm along with the Merlindia food truck. They will be at that lot tonight from 5pm “until the ghouls and ghosts go home”. And they will be there all weekend through Sunday. The food trucks that they bring the rest of the weekend will rotate. Stay tuned for more details including plans for the second bus, Retro Orange 613, which will have a more structured 34 seat layout.
