Mark It (and buy your ticket) – 1st Annual Taste of North Capitol is June 1st!!

“North Capitol Main Streets will host its 1st annual Taste of North Capitol on Thursday June 1st, from 7pm to 10pm. The event will celebrate the neighborhood’s diverse businesses and residents, and is a fundraiser for initiatives that enhance and promote commerce within the Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Truxton Circle neighborhoods. Held in the Atrium at the NPR building, guests can expect an awesome showing of food and cocktails as bars and restaurants come together for the first time ever to showcase the unique offerings of the neighborhood in this manner. The hashtag #NorthCapontheMap represents this hidden gem of a neighborhood is not so hidden anymore.

The Eckington, Truxton Circle, and Bloomingdale neighborhoods are home to some of DC’s most unique offerings and one-of-a-kind categories. From Jam Doung’s authentic Jamaican Cuisine and the city’s best BBQ at DCity Smokehouse to the cookies at Uncle Chips and the authentic Italian sandwiches from Yang Market, the North Capitol neighborhood has offerings unlike any other corridor in the city. Openings such as The Pub and the People and The Wicked Bloom, have ushered a craft cocktail culture in the neighborhood while others such as El Camino, Boundary Stone, and Big Bear Cafe provide laid back neighborhood hangouts for locals and beyond. The Taste of North Capitol aims to highlight this unique neighborhood and the businesses that make it so special.

Catch a dynamic drum duo jam as you enter the Taste of North Capitol and get hip to the neighborhood’s newest and coolest music studio on the block, 7DrumCity. Guests can expect a festive atmosphere, unlimited cuisine and cocktail tastings from the Taste of North Capitol’s host committee of chefs, restaurateurs, and mixologists. Live music from Aztec Sun Band, dancing, raffles and other surprises that will compliment the delicious evening are all in store. For example, farm to cocktail activations such as the Cultivate the City Mojito Tower and other fresh ingredients and garnishes from the area’s farmers markets and gardens.

Big Bear adding more outdoor seating on Rooftop and expanding into 2nd Floor space too!

Since the spot is, seemingly, never not crowded I’ll go with – Boom! From a liquor license application:

“Applicant requests a Summer Garden Endorsement with 68 seats. Applicant also requests an expansion to the second floor, adding 60 seats for a Total Occupancy Load of 202 for the entire premises.”

Washington Business Journal reported that this Summer Garden seating will be on the rooftop.

I’m definitely going with – Boom!

“Owner Matt Weiss (201 Bar, Barrel, Union Pub & McClellan’s Retreat) is poised to open his latest venture Truxton Inn, a neighborhood cocktail bar. Situated at the crossroads of Florida Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue in Bloomingdale, Truxton Inn is set to debut Tuesday, May 2nd.
Truxton Inn’s cocktail program is under the direction of Brian Nixon, who also runs the bar at McClellan’s Retreat in Upper Dupont Circle.

“First and foremost, we were looking to create a neighborhood bar, with really great cocktails,” explains Nixon. The menu at Truxton Inn is separated into two parts, The Classics featuring six classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Negroni and Manhattan and six that are Recommendations, Nixon and team’s interpretation of those classics. Highlights from the Recommendations menu include the JFK on Vacay with Maui Pineapple Rum, Rhum Agricole, Passionfruit, Lime and House Made Mulled Simple Syrup, the No sé – groni with Ilegal Joven Mezcal, Peychaud’s Aperitivo, Punt E Mes and the Truxton Inn Manhattan with Truxton Inn Select Whistle Pig Barrel 276, Antica Carpano, Benedictine and Angostura Bitters. Both menus will change every other month.

In addition to cocktails, the menu will offer a select list of beers and wine, including local beers like 3 Stars and DC Brau. Nixon also plans on using local spirits, like One Eight Distilling Vodka and their Rock Creek Rye, Republic Restoratives Civic Vodka, Murlarkey Gin, Cotton & Reed Rums and All Spice Dram. Another fun touch are “Snaiquiris,” Nixon’s mini version of the JFK on Vacay, his take on a classic daiquiri.

Like McClellan’s Retreat, Truxton Inn is an warm, intimate space, fashioned to feel like a neighborhood bar that has been a fixture for many years. They will offer small bites like charcuterie and cheese, as well as Texas style Kolaches from Republic, an owner favorite.

Weiss and long time collaborator Molly Allen worked together on the design of the space, aiming to create the feel of a classic Inn or hotel bar, but with a more modern aesthetic. A green marble bar top, antique couches and funky light fixtures complete the space, which seats 50. A patio is planned for the warmer months.”

Tyber Creek Wine Bar and Kitchen opens in former Rustik space Thursday!

Thanks to the owners for sending a quick update on Rustik’s replacement in Bloomingdale – Tyber Creek Wine Bar and Kitchen:

“We will be opening next Thursday, May 4th at 5:00pm – our typical hours will be Monday – Friday 5:00 pm to close and Saturday & Sunday 11:00am to close. But our first weekend we will be Thursday – Saturday 5:00pm to close and Sunday 11:00am – close.

We are really excited to be part of the Bloomingdale community and hope to provide a comfortable neighborhood restaurant with wood fired food, a curated wine program and seasonal beers & cocktails. Our Chef, Kerry Tate, has developed an innovative but approachable menu with dishes such as roast half chicken over bread salad, wood oven mussels in tomato fennel broth and a lamb flatbread topped with arugula salad- to name a few of my favorites.”

Common Good City Farm Benefit in Memory of Tricia McCauley Tomorrow (Thurs.) at Boundary Stone

“Boundary Stone (116 Rhode Island Ave, NW) is hosting a benefit for Common Good City Farm beginning Thursday in memory of Bloomingdale resident Tricia McCauley. In addition to charitable contributions to the cause from both 3 Stars Brewing and DC Brau (a rotation of DC Brau and 3-Stars on the “Common Good” Tap, with all proceeds going to support the farm), Atlas Brew Works will debut “Isla De Encanta” – a beer brewed in her honor and especially for this event. All proceeds will go to Common Good City Farm in Bloomingdale, a non-profit organization where Tricia honed her skills as an herbalist.

Common Good will also be dedicating a memorial herb garden at their location on Sat, April 15th at 11AM.”

“Trying to connect with the owners of a dog that bit my dog Sunday morning”

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I were running with our dog past Big Bear around 8:30am this morning (Sunday) when two dogs – they looked like young-ish vizslas – who were tied up outside Big Bear jumped into our path and one bit our dog Charlie. We managed to get between them and break it up before anything too serious happened. The owners came outside and we let them know what had happened but in the panic we left without getting their name or contact information (stupid mistake, I know!) By the time we got our dog home we realized that his back leg was bleeding quite badly. We’ve been to the animal hospital etc. but for peace of mind and after-care we want to see if we can find the owners to make sure their dogs are fully vaccinated.”
