“Skate, bike, run or hike your way into Anacostia Park along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in celebration of National Trails Day. On June 3, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Anacostia Park will host a National Trails Day event that is fun for the whole family.

Start your excursion at the Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion in Anacostia Park (D.C.) or at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Md. and enjoy “pit stops” along the way! The National Park Service and the 11th Street Bridge Park present the third annual Anacostia River Festival, a premier event of the 2017 National Cherry Blossom Festival. For a taste of local D.C., come celebrate the Anacostia River and take a canoe out to explore the River, ride in our bike parade, play lawn games with your family and experience Southeast D.C.’s local arts scene at this special FREE event. This year we are celebrating biking in the District with trail rides, safety classes, quick bike tune ups and special bike activities for all ages.

This year’s program will have a special focus on biking in the District and will celebrate the new extension of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to Bladensburg, MD.

We are anticipating over 8,000 visitors and are partnering with more than 40 nonprofits to offer FREE family-friendly activities re-engaging residents and visitors alike with the Anacostia River and Historic Anacostia neighborhood.

Update: Found! Harry missing from Anacostia

“My cat, Harry got out some time early this morning in Anacostia. He does have a collar but he’s slipped out of that before so he might not have it on. His belly is shaved from a recent ultrasound.

He got out around the area of Talbert Ct/Dexter Terrace SE.

He doesn’t really come when called (he’s a cat, after all) but he loves all food and would probably come if someone put food down.

“Metro Transit Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly threatened a Green Line train operator with a knife this morning.

At approximately 8:40 a.m. today, Metro Transit Police officers responded to Anacostia Station after the operator of a southbound Green Line train reported that he had been threatened with a knife by a male patron, subsequently identified as Norman W. Polk.

Polk allegedly kicked and banged on the door leading to the train operator’s cab while the train was stopped servicing a station. When the operator opened the door to see what was going on, Polk allegedly displayed a three-inch folding knife and verbally threatened the operator for not moving the train fast enough. The operator secured the door and radioed for assistance.

Metro Transit Police responded, and the suspect was arrested on the platform at Anacostia Station without further incident. A knife was recovered at the scene.

The police activity resulted in Green Line delays of approximately 15 minutes during the morning rush hour, and two trains were single-tracked around the incident. There were no injuries.”

“DC Water to build first new water tower in 71 years”

“After more than 10 years in the planning and approval process, DC Water is moving forward with the St. Elizabeths water storage tower. Construction is slated to begin in the coming weeks, and is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Some areas east of the Anacostia River have historically experienced low water pressure. DC Water planned years ago to improve the pressure with a new pumping station, water tower and transmission mains. Together, these elements would create a new water service zone (new pressure area) south of the Ft. Stanton area. While the pumping station was built in 2008, the water storage tower was delayed in approvals and permitting. (more…)

“What will it take to get our law enforcement to treat all victims of a crime with the same respect?”

“Dear PoPville,

I am a property manager and I manage a number of small condominiums all over the city including Georgetown, Anacostia, Columbia Heights, Eastern Market, etc.

On Tuesday night, 3/8/16, a resident/owner at one of my buildings in Anacostia – who we’ll call Paul – arrived home around 10:30pm to an apartment that had been robbed. While we are not entirely sure the order of events, based on what we know, the perpetrators most likely entered through his bedroom window and proceeded to steal his computer, TV, and PlayStation. It was most likely a group of kids, one of whom broke through the window, walked through the apartment, and let his/her accomplices in through the front door.

When the police arrived on site on the night of 3/8/16, as Paul explained to the police what happened, the police accused Paul of “staging” the break-in, asking Paul if there was “anything else he was leaving out of the story.” (more…)

“We are thrilled to announce the return of the Anacostia River Festival on Sunday, April 17 from 1 – 5PM in Anacostia Park, a premier event and official closing program of the National Cherry Blossom Festival! This year’s festival celebrates “connecting people to parks” in recognition of the National Park Service’s Centennial celebration. Activities include: kayaking, boating, fishing workshops, hands-on art projects, musical performances, bike parades, and other unique programs engaging families with the river, its history and ecology. Held in Anacostia Park, this FREE event will encourage District residents and tourists alike to explore communities and parks east of the river.

When: Sunday, April 17, 2016; 1 pm – 5 pm
Where: National Park Service’s Anacostia Park. Good Hope Road and Anacostia Drive SE
Who: FREE and open to the public.
