“Dear PoPville,

As if we needed more evidence that the DC police budget is extremely inflated and misdirected…this scene from Columbia Rd NW between 18th and 16th on the evening of 2/6/21. A small group of peaceful protesters (30-40 people tops; I’m guessing racial justice-focused based on their chants, but I do not know the organizing group nor do I speak for them) walked down Columbia Rd while a disproportionately large police presence preceded them AND followed them. In the attached image, the only group NOT circled is the protestors.

Police escorting large protests/marches to maintain traffic safety is one thing, but this is excessive and clearly intimidating. (more…)

Thanks to Ron for sending the reminder (and the really good video above) about the anniversary of the tragic Knickerbocker storm disaster. The Washington Post reported:

“By the end of that day…, 98 people lay dead, crushed beneath the fallen timbers and concrete of the roof of the Knickerbocker Theatre. Structurally unsound, it had caved in under the weight of nearly two feet of snow.

Because the streets were nearly impassable, the moviegoers had mostly trudged on foot to the theater at Columbia Road and 18th Street NW. The crowd, which had been snowbound for days, was young and festive. There were many, many children.”

From MPD: “The Third District is currently investigating a suspicious letter in the 1700 block of Columbia Rd NW. At this time, several roadways in the area are closed to pedestrians and vehicles. Please avoid the area.”

Readers report: “They’re letting pedestrians out now, street still closed. Most action is right here by 17th.” (more…)

Thanks to Alexandra for sharing this awesomeness:

“DC friends, ever wonder what 18th Street looked like in the 1970s?

This is my dad in front of his print shop, Rainbow Press.

Plenty of posters calling for DC statehood on those walls!

It later became Rumba Cafe. Curious to see what it will be next.”

Magnificent. Here’s what Rumba Cafe looked like in it’s heyday: (more…)
