Thanks to all for sending word and photos. Cris writes:

“Washington Pizza building at 14th and Randolph finally coming down, making way for residential building with ground floor retail. This is a couple doors down from Little Coco’s and just up the block from Lyman’s/Derby/Taqueria Habanero/Mezcalero/soon-to-be Little Havana! Lots of changes happening on this stretch of 14th…”

STAY TUNED.

Back in June we shared some scuttlebutt about a new Cuban restaurant coming to half of Delicia’s Market at 14th and Quincy St, NW. A new liquor license placard confirms it as Little Havana:

“New Class “C” Restaurant serving Latino-American cuisine. Total Occupancy Load of 60 and seating for 60. Sidewalk Café with 12 seats.”

This ought add another wrinkle to the friendly Taqueria Habanero vs Mezcalero rivalry.

Stay tuned for more on Little Havana as they get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,

I live in 16th Street Heights and was rudely awakened shortly after 6 by a helicopter doing low altitude circles this morning…this was followed by a cacophony of sirens about an hour later…any idea what that was all about?”

and

“Around 610am this morning there was a low flying helicopter circling Petworth. Super loud – it woke me up and made the floors of my apartment vibrate. Anyone have any idea what’s going on?”

Update from MPD:

This was a US Park Police helicopter assisting MPD with an investigation in the 900 block of Shepherd Street, NW.

Not sure if related but last night MPD reported: (more…)

And later this week is here!! Moreland’s Tavern opens today (4pm-12am) and folks who live nearby are gonna freakout. The excitement built up for Swampoodle will finally be met at Moreland’s. I stopped by a soft opening last night and well you’ll see. Actually, the place was packed so you won’t see that well but you’ll get an idea. As we’ve known each other 11 years now, you can trust me on this one. It is legit dope. While there is a nice bar and seating on the first floor, it is really the second floor that won my heart. It is dominated by a huge triangle shaped bar that just feels super comfortable. Also they have RAR’s Nanticoke Nectar on tap. Standby for the 12 year PoPville anniversary party here next November – and in the meantime – 16th Street Heights, your neighborhood gathering spot has arrived.

Oh yeah, a super fly garden/patio is coming when it warms up again in the spring.

Update: Check out the menu here (PDF)

Many more photos after the jump. (more…)

This week is turning out to be a very good week indeed. Moreland’s Tavern, from a couple folks behind Boundary Stone (Bloomingdale) and DC Reynolds (Petworth), is opening later this week in the old and brief Swampoodle space at 14th/Colorado/Kennedy intersection.

Also:

“We are excited to announce our Chef partner Emily Baran. Emily who is a DC Native, graduated top of her class from L’Academie de Cuisine. Emily has honed her culinary skills at a variety of Washington DC area restaurants; spending time in fine dining restaurants and finding a home in family friendly establishments. Most recently, Emily served as sous chef at Clydes Restaurant. We are super excited to have her.”

Stay tuned for many more details and an exact opening date soon.

“Dear PoPville,

Remember a few years back when people posing as Verizon employees where knocking on doors to do a system check? I believe that scam is running again in Petworth/ 16th St. Heights.

I had 3 young adults knock on my door today alleging to work for Verizon. One was wearing a very faded Verizon shirt, the others looked like they were in school uniforms – dark polos and kakhi pants.

I explained that I had recently moved iand I just had Verizon at my house last week, so I would call the office if I had problems and they went away.

But just wanted to remind people not let these people in your house. Verizon employees should be able to show you an employee ID and do not do door to door solicitations.

Be safe!”

From MPD:

“Burglary 1 / Sexual Assault Allegation – 3700 block of 16th St. NW

The case is being investigated by the Sexual Assault Unit and if you have any information, please call 202-727-9099.”

I’m getting giddy. Though the eye catching bright green shall be missed, the rendering (above) for Moreland’s Tavern looks great. And the history is freaking phenomenal. More info on the chef and menus coming soon!

Here’s some more background on the restaurant replacing Swampoodle from one of the owners of Boundary Stone and DC Reynolds:

“We are still aiming for a Fall opening with the name Moreland’s Tavern.

Some history here on Moreland’s Tavern:

Moreland’s Tavern is where the soldiers from Fort Stevens used to go to eat and drink during the civil war. Fun fact about Fort Stevens, it was also the only Fort to see any action during the civil war and actually defended the city from the Confederate Army. So basically Moreland’s Tavern saved D.C. It was also the first place place to welcome people into the city, and the last stop on the way out with Georgia Ave being a main thoroughfare.”
