Sen. John S. McCain III by Steve Pyke, 2005, inkjet print. National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. © 2005, Steve Pyke.
From a press release:
“The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery recognizes the life and legacy of late Senator and former presidential nominee John S. McCain III with a photograph by the British-born photographer Steve Pyke. The portrait will be installed this morning in the museum’s In Memoriam space on the first floor.
McCain, who was born in 1936, was an established politician and Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. Before entering politics, he demonstrated great commitment to his country by enduring five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War. Following his release from prison in 1973, he later relocated to Arizona where he began a career in politics. A long-time Republican, McCain was the winner of the party’s presidential nomination in 2008. His lifetime commitment to public service is marked by his two years in the House of Representatives and his work as a six-term elected Senator of Arizona. He also served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. Despite his battle with brain cancer, McCain served in the Senate until his death. He is survived by his wife and seven children. “Dear PoPville,
I just wanted to share the incredible story of Leonard Hyater Jr. Anyone who passed by 19th & M street on weekday mornings knew him – if not by name, then by his warm smile, pleasant disposition, and dedication to selling Street Sense – he was there every morning, Monday through Friday.
A few years ago he was profiled in the paper, where readers learned that he used to work as a mortgage loan officer before falling on hard times and becoming homeless. Determined to get back on his feet, Leonard began selling Street Sense newspapers in 2012. (more…)

KK Brady
“Dear PoPville,
There is a small bakery in Leesburg, VA called Cowbell Kitchen. They opened the brick & mortar last October. Here is a short article on the two owners, Cheryl Strasser and KK Brady.
Throughout that past couple of years, Cowbell Kitchen was a food truck and has/had a presence in 9 farmers markets throughout DC.
Six weeks ago, KK checked herself into the hospital with flu-like symptoms. Without going too far into detail, she was placed into a medically induced coma and airlifted to Fairfax Hospital. She passed away on Thursday. She was only 23 years old. Needless to say, the community is absolutely devastated.
Her family created a website to share details of her memorial services. There is also a button for her GoFundMe page on this site.”

“Dear PoPville,
Midtown Youth Academy, the all purpose youth center located at 14th and W street NW lost its beloved curator and father this past weekend, Eugene THUNDER Hughes. Mr. Hughes was an incredible human, and his story is one that needs to be told throughout the district, especially as Midtown Youth Academy is attempting to raise funds to reopen this spring. Attached below, I have a video about the Academy, as I could go on for days about what an impact this man has had on our community for more then 40 years, let alone my personal life.”

From Bub and Pop’s:
“The Hebrew Hammer Comes to Bub and Pop’s
Chef Jon had approached me about changing the name of our Jewish Hoagie for sometime. We’ve decided to do it!
We are changing the name of one of our most popular sandwiches, the Jewish Hoagie – to the Hebrew Hammer. This monster pastrami, brisket, roast turkey, kosher salami, spicy mustard, 1,000 Island and Swiss piled with our Cole Slaw was featured by Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
We are changing the name to honor our son, brother, husband and father, Peter W. Taub, Special Agent, AFOSI, who lost his life on December 21, 2015 in Afghanistan along with his squad of 5 other service members.
Pete was given the name Hebrew Hammer after a sparring session between himself and Jonathan M. Oldhorse. They were training partners in both Karate and MBC (Martial Blade Concepts) when Pete was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. I asked Jonathan to share the story. (more…)
