The story of Wendy Martinez, the runner stabbed in Logan circle last fall, was so hard for so many of us in DC.
Her fiancée Daniel is running the Boston marathon in a few weeks and is still $4,000 away from his fundraising goal. I don’t know him personally but saw a news story about the race and wanted to help out. Sometimes the runner has to make up the difference for these fundraising bibs. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
It’s with great sadness that I write to you that my beloved CVS pharmacist at the 2129 14th St NW location, Annie, recently passed away.
Last week when my prescriptions got messed up I angrily asked where Annie was because she’s the only one at this pharmacy that could get my medicines right. Admittedly, I have some annoying medicines that require extra work, special orders, and atypical amounts that trip up most pharmacists. But not Annie. Over some of these weird quirks and issues, I grew closer to her and really appreciated how hardworking she was and able to solve almost any issue with ease and a smile.
When I asked where she was, I received a strange answer from one of the technicians–“she’s not here anymore.” (more…)

Thanks to Susan for sending a sad update on the legendary Evelyn Y. Davis, who’s tombstone is in Rock Creek Church cemetery in Petworth. “Queen of the Corporate Jungle. 1929 – Forever”
The New York Times reported yesterday:
“Evelyn Y. Davis, who spent more than 50 years haranguing American executives at shareholder meetings as she pushed companies to be more frugal and transparent, died on Sunday in Washington. She was 89.”
Unfortunately I can’t find my other old photos but Atlas Obscura has some good shots and writes:
“The notorious gadfly decided to erect her own postmortem monument in 1981 to celebrate her successes. She used the tombstone to list her resume, divorces (there are four, two of which were etched in at later dates), and the fact that she never had children. One of the accompanying stones contains a quote that clearly sums up her philosophy on life: “Power is greater than love, and I did not get where I am by standing in line nor by being shy.”
Ed. Note: Gore Vidal, Tim Russert, a Prime Minister and a Princess are buried in this cemetery among other notables.

“There will be a candlelight vigil in Dupont Circle, Thursday evening October 25th from 7pm to 745pm, in advance of Friday’s interment of Matthew Shepard’s ashes in the National Cathedral. For twenty years, his ashes have not been laid to rest, as his parents worried that if they chose a final resting place, it would be at risk of desecration. But, on Friday, this tragic odyssey will come to an end, as there will be a final home for Matthew in a place his parents say he would love.
And so we will gather Thursday evening at 7pm at the fountain in Dupont Circle as a community to mark this occasion and stand against intolerance, hatred, and the violence that claimed Matthew’s life and continues today. (more…)
Update from MPD:
“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Monday, September 24, 2018, in the 1200 block of Constitution Avenue, Northwest.
The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:31 am, an adult male riding a bicycle was traveling eastbound in the 1200 block of Constitution Avenue, Northwest, crossing over 12th Street. The operator of a dark colored sedan entered the crosswalk and proceeded through the intersection on a red traffic signal, striking the bicyclist at a high rate of speed. After the collision, the driver of the sedan continued northbound on 12th Street, Northwest without stopping.
The decedent has been identified as 64-year-old Thomas Hendricks Hollowell, of Arlington, VA.
On Friday, October 12, 2018, pursuant to a DC Superior Court warrant, 20-year-old Phillip Peoples, of Suitland, MD, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder.”

“Memorial Bike Ride for Thomas Hollowell
Thursday, Oct. 4, 5:15 p.m.
Farragut Square, DC
More than 300 bicyclists from across the DC region are expected gather on Thursday, October 4 at 5:15 p.m. to hold a memorial bike ride in memory of Thomas Hollowell. Dr. Hollowell was riding his bike to work on Mon., Sept. 24 when he was hit and killed by a driver running a red light at 12th & Constitution NW. Tom had been a bike commuter for more than 20 years. The ride will begin at Farragut Square and will end with a moment of silence at the crash site. Following the moment of silence, Dr. Hollowell’s family will dedicate a ghost bike in his memory.
