From a press release:

“Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau released the following statement after D.C. Council approved a bill to move forward with the development of affordable housing, a Whole Foods and market rate units at 965 Florida Ave NW. The land is located in Ward 1.

“This is great news for the community. All told, it will bring 106 units of affordable housing as well as a Whole Foods full-service grocery store to an area that needs more affordable housing options.

“As a strong supporter of affordable housing, I’ve worked hard to move this building forward from before my time on the Council and as a Councilmember. This is the first development in the District to follow the District’s newly-adopted affordable housing rules, which means 30% of its units will be affordable. In particular, these units will be made available to some of our most vulnerable residents and families making between 30-50% of the area median income.

“This strong affordable housing component is why the building is supported by the nonprofit, nonpartisan D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute and by the Coalition for Smarter Growth. ANC 1B, which includes the parcel, also recently passed a resolution in support of the development.”

Big Bloomingdale news from the Bloomingdale blog – Harris Teeter Signs Letter of Intent at McMillan – thanks to a reader for passing on:

“Our listserv had some news about McMillan today. It’s nonbinding, and who knows how long it will end up being before anything really happens at McMillan, but an exciting development nonetheless.”

Formal announcement expected summer/fall of 2016 – stay tuned!

A reader reports:

“I’m not sure what was going on exactly, but there was some sort of protest at the P street Whole Foods around 1:30pm. All of a sudden people just started chanting near a hummus display in front of the cookies. The police probably arrived in less than 2 minutes and told the protest leader they had to get out of the store, then they marched out single file, yelling their chant, and stood outside. The whole foods staff was pretty great about the incident — the check out lines kept moving….”

Nothing is official until the doors actually open – this I think I am finally learning. Back in May we finally thought the Whole Foods coming to Shaw was officially official. Alas – the Washington Business Journal now reports:

“The North Shaw neighborhood could lose its Whole Foods Market before it even gets it if the D.C. Council doesn’t act to approve the development.

The sale price could be why Council Chairman Phil Mendelson hasn’t brought the issue up for a vote. During a hearing in early June, Mendelson and Councilwoman Mary Cheh expressed concerns with the proposed sale price of $1.4 million, citing a D.C. government appraisal of the property at $27 million.”
