Update from CM Allen’s office via OP:

“Thank you again for reaching out to our office. I have spoken with Matt, the Manager at Safeway. He was unaware of the signs, and didn’t know where they came from. He has taken them down, and is looking into why they were put up.”

“Dear PoPville,

This sign was post recently (I saw it yesterday, not sure how long it’s been there) at the Safeway at the Waterfront metro. I am sure this will impact certain racial and social groups disproportionately. I have alerted CM Allen’s office about this, but I hope other neighborhood residents will see this and voice their concerns as well.”

Nothing.

Thanks to Captain Easychord for sending last night around 6pm:

“Currently a line to get in to the hottest club of 2018: Trader Joe’s. They have a “bouncer” working the door, letting people in one at a time… Just need a velvet rope to be official, I think…”

Ed. Note: I support the enthusiasm and would also wait in lines through fire and ice for my delicious, delicious mini tacos.

From the Columbia Heights listserv:

“I have been shopping for years at various MOM’s markets and find their wide selection and reasonable pricing to be unparalleled in providing organic foods for their respective communities. I have spoken with managerial personnel at their stores about the possibility of MOM’s opening a market in Columbia Heights. They suggested that we communicate our interest in having our own MOM’s market directly to the owner of the markets, Scott . I specifically asked if the owner might object to many individuals sending personal e-mails and was assured that, on the contrary, Scott would welcome such communications/requests. So, if you’d like to chime-in on this subject, send your thoughts to [email protected]

Just to add, MOM’s markets have an excellent selection of organic bulk foods but at prices far lower that those of comparable markets. They also function as what I would call a full-service market but with added features like Naked Lunch, their healthy, customized eat-in buffet.

Here’s hoping that this grass-roots effort will result in a community asset certain to enhance our quality of living in Columbia Heights.”

“Dear PoPville,

What’s going on with the 4th and Florida Ave NE Trader Joes?? You posted that they put up a liquor placard back in March but they’re still not open nor even saying when it might be open.

Maybe someone in the community knows what’s taking so long? People are living in the apartment building on top of the storefront, so the building is “done.” I drive by there almost everyday and it doesn’t look like TJs is opening anytime soon.”

Trader Joe’s posted back in August:

“Washington (Union Market District), D.C. – Opening 2018!

Our Crew is working hard so we can open our doors in 2018. We’ll continue to post new details about the store and its opening here, so please check back for updates.

Date & Time Opening:
TBD in 2018

Store Address:
1240 4th Street NE”

Also please note:

I for one welcome our delicious overlords. The long rumored Trader Joe’s coming to Glover Park is now official with the application of a liquor license for Trader Joe’s #620:

“A Full- Service Grocery store that will serve hot and cold meals, which includes salads, sandwiches, pizza, sushi, baked goods, and non-alcoholic beverages. Tasting Permit requested.”

STAY TUNED for this and all the other ones coming too.
