tomato plant

And what they don’t like basil? But seriously that sucks.

“Dear PoPville,

I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised but one of our tomato plants was stolen from our garden bed in the front of our house on Marion st in Shaw. Roots and all – it was just gone when we got back home Sunday evening.

I’m struggling to figure out what the point of stealing it could possibly be. The plant wasn’t yet flowering – it’ll take another 30 days or so until tomatoes are even produced so if the thief wants to get anything out of it it will take some serious TLC. You could also buy a plant for $3 around the corner at Old City Farm. Or – they could actually just go buy tomatoes at Giant!

Does anyone have any tips on how to protect the rest of my garden from this happening again?”

Our poor plant!

“Dear PoPville,

It appears we have an H Street NE garden thief on our hands! Much to my surprise, as I left my home the other morning, I noticed that someone came along and cut the entire top off the dracaena plant in my front yard. This was not a simple assault either, clearly the horticultural pillager knew how to surgically remove the top of the plant in one cut. Why did this horror occur? Was someone just that envious of it’s beautiful green leaves, or was someone with a greener thumb than me sympathetic to its languishing? This plant had been with us for quite some time, so I’m very saddened by this!

I would chalk it up to kids, but the plant was not pulled out of the pot or broken. Clearly, as the picture indicates, someone precisely cut the top off. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them before? This is certainly bizarre. H Street NE neighbors–hide your plants and remain vigilant!”

I ran into Ray Natter who says he’s been a guerrilla gardening here for about 5 years now. A couple years ago NBC did a story on him after the National Park Service threatened to mow the flowers:

“First harvest of the season from our Old Soldier’s Home garden plot. Un-beetable? Lots more to come. Not pictured: strawberries that got eaten before we left the garden!”
