“We are the Senior Class Student Government representatives at Bell Multicultural High School, a public school in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington D.C. This year, our graduating class has been working tremendously, in order to raise enough money to decrease the cost of our senior fees of $300/per student. This total only accounts for the each students Cap and Gown, Graduation Announcements, Yearbook, 1-Prom Ticket, Senior Class T-Shirt, and a Senior lunch. “On February 24, Zack and I experienced most people’s worst nightmare. We were evacuated from our home on a few moments’ notice for our own safety. Within an hour, we were alerted to the terrifying fact that we would never live their again, and many of our possessions had been destroyed. The middle section of the three-story building where five of us had been living collapsed from negligent construction nextdoor.

We have now been informed that the city of DC will conduct a piecemeal demolition of our home, and we will only be able to salvage priceless items. Not only are we homeless and possessionless, but we feel emotionally and physically destroyed. I know some people feel these fund sites are tacky, but this is what the are designed for–to help people in crisis. We are fighting tooth-and-nail with the insurance companies…but they are not quick to offer up cash to assist in things like food, toiletries, transportation, and putting a deposit down on a new apartment. We thank everyone for their support and I can honestly tell you I have never felt more defeated in my adult life.”

It’s that time of year again – I don’t like to bother you guys with my personal projects but this is another one that means a lot to me – and it’s a fight I’m sure you can get behind. If you’re able please give whatever you can and like previous years – anyone who gives $15 or more will get a free PoPville shirt that you can pick up at the shaving event. “Capital Checkers, a 30-yr-old Shaw institution, has no heat, may have to close. Pls donate”

The Fundraiser says:

“Capital Checkers has been a DC cultural institution for over 30 years, located just off U St on the corner of S & 9th NW. Home to several national champions and grand master players, Capital Checkers is one of the only checkers associations in America that provides a dedicated space for its members. Over the years, DC has gentrified, rent has gone up, and members have had to pay more and more. This year, the furnace broke, and their is no heat in the building. Members continue to play in the cold building, but they do not have enough money to make the repairs and pay rent. Without your help, Capital Checkers will have to close its doors. (more…)

Matt Shlonsky (innocent bystander shot outside the Shaw Metro) Memorial Fundraiser this Thursday

“Dear PoPville,

I was a close friend of Matt Shlonsky, the American University alum who was killed in the Shaw Metro shooting in August. Since that time, a group of Matt’s friends and I have established a Memorial Fund in his name with American University’s School of International Service. The Matt Shlonsky Memorial Fund was established within American University’s School of International Service this fall.

This event will be the second fundraiser for the Fund, and is scheduled for 7:00pm on February 11th at Town Hall in Glover Park [2340 Wisconsin Ave NW]. The goal is to raise an additional few thousand dollars, as well as spread awareness about the Fund and our goals. So far we have raised close to $25,000, which is half way to our goal of $50,000, at which point the Fund will exist in perpetuity.”

Fundraiser for woman carjacked in Navy Yard who “suffered broken nose, broken jaw and 2 broken teeth”

“Neighbors,

I have set up a GoFundMe page for Jin, who was the victim in the Carjacking on 18 Dec. 2015. This crime was a horrendous crime and very serious as this crime and the recent robberies have made many in our community concerned for there safety. While this GoFundMe page will not stop crime, it will show the support of our community to one of our neighbors, Jin, who is currently recovering from the aggravated assault from being carjacked which caused serious bodily harm and required surgery. Jin is currently at home recovering.

She suffered one broken nose bone, few broken jaw bones, broken left lips and 2 broken teeth, which required oral surgery and 12 stitches on my lips and still have severe headaches. She also suffered a big blow to her head.

I have received overwhelming support for this GoFundMe page and know that our community is more than neighbors, friends and people. We are a support structure that provides to the needs of others to help them build, grow, and overcome what life throws at them.”
