If you want to eat for a good cause past Saturday – hit Himitsu.

From a press release:

WHAT: This year more than ever before, the DC restaurant community has mobilized to help neighbors and friends near and far. Earlier this year, Himitsu‘s Carlie Steiner and Kevin Tien supported Planned Parenthood ahead of January’s Women’s March. In the past week, Tropical Storm Harvey has flooded Houston and the surrounding areas, causing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

In response, Himitsu will be open on Sunday September 3rd and Monday September 4th for regular dinner service and a Chicken Sando lunch pop-up. 100% of profits will be donated to local Texas resources- one for immediate relief and one for long-term relief that will help build back homes and neighborhoods. They are The Greater Houston Community Foundation and The United Way.

Himitsu will also be donating 10% of their profits (and will accept open donations) all week leading up to Sunday and Monday to Feeding Texas, a nonprofit that works with state and federal relief efforts and steps in during major disasters to help coordinate food efforts. (more…)

From a press release:

“The rain hasn’t stopped falling over southeast Texas, but relief efforts are already well on the way from every corner of the country. It’s obvious from the horrific images of devastation all across Houston and the Gulf Coast, this storm will require help from all of us. While no amount of money is enough to replace lost loved ones or repair the mental and emotional damage left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake, any amount of money is enough to begin to help rebuild.

This Saturday, September 2nd, members of DC’s food and beverage community are banding together for a city-wide fundraiser in support of the American Red Cross’ relief efforts. Organizers from DC Brau and Boundary Stone, among others, are reaching out to partners in the community to join them.

“We are asking YOU, our fellow Washingtonians and members of DC’s vibrant and passionate food and beverage community to donate a portion of your sales this Saturday, September 2nd with the goal of raising a minimum of $25,000.00 to help those affected by the floods,” says organizers Gareth Croke and Colin McDonough of Boundary and DC Brau’s Brandon Skall. From a press release:

“Students going back to school often look forward to the chance to pick out new school clothes and new favorite pens, notebooks, backpacks and other school supplies. However, that rush of back to school shopping is a luxury some cannot afford.

Two students with big hearts took this into consideration and sprung into action to help their community be prepared for the upcoming school year. Taylor J and Trinity B created a Back 2 School Supply Drive for children in need. People can donate packs of pens, pencils, binders, notebooks and other new to gentle used school items now through August 12th, 2017 at Starrs Second Story Boutique (3903 Georgia Ave NW). Donations will go to the Park View Elementary school. (more…)

The displaced neighbors [8 people from the 200 block of Morgan St, NW] are working with the Red Cross for some short term needs, but in addition a neighbor has started a GoFundMe to bridge some gaps.

A Facebook group has been set up to track progress and help organize other donations and efforts as needed.

And BKK Cookshop on NY Ave is donating 10% of their proceeds next Tuesday, July 25 to help those displaced as well.”

“Dear PoPville,

A local elementary school student drowned while at the pool with her family last Saturday, and the family is seeking funds for counseling (presumably for the three other children in the family) and her memorial. I am not affiliated whatsoever, but it’s such a heartbreaking story that I felt compelled to share. The family could use the community support.”

From GoFundMe:

On Saturday, July 1, J’da Symone Gadson, 7 year old student at West Education Campus died in a pool accident while with her family. J’da was one of the sweetest children in our second grade class. She loved to learn and was a tremendously hard worker. J’da had her own sense of style and came to school each day with a bright smile. She will be truly missed by her classmates, teachers and West family. Mother Shawnice Winslow and her three children are having a difficult time coping with the loss. The school community would like to support through helping with counseling services, memorial costs and additional family expenses.
