Thought you should report on this senseless killing of a family man in NE last week.

He was the husband of the long-time, beloved pre-k teacher at Stoddert Elementary. A go fund me has been started to support the family as well.”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, in the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast.

At approximately 10:37 pm, members of the Sixth District were flagged down at the listed location for a stabbing. Upon arrival, members located an adult male suffering from a stab wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. After all lifesaving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 53 year-old Curtis Barnum, of Southeast, DC. (more…)

The team has performed at numerous events around DC, including the annual 5th District holiday-party, Beat the Streets, Rosedale Basketball Classic and National Night Out. “For the month of October, Shannan Troncoso, co-owner of Brookland’s Finest, has teamed up with local female-owned distillery, Republic Restoratives, for a weekly series of prix fixe distiller dinners, with a portion of the proceeds going to support mobile mammograms for underserved women in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Starting October 2nd, and every Tuesday in October, Brookland’s Finest will offer this $35 three-course seasonal distiller dinner menu with accompanying Republic Restoratives pink-themed cocktails.

A portion of the proceeds from each distiller dinner will be donated to the Mammovan, a GW Cancer Center program which provides mobile cancer screenings to women in underserved communities in DC. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from October’s draft cocktail, a pink ‘Civic Cosmopolitan,’ will be donated to support the efforts of the Mammovan. “Around 6pm this morning a naked woman screeming homophbic gestures threw a brick through the Check It store and community center double pain window and door.

This is devastating because if the insurance pays for it there will be a huge increase because of the stores location.

The building has been a safe haven for the “LGBT Youth”, “Returned Citizens” and community as a whole. Your support is need so “Check It” can secure its building and get back to the great work that so many have benefited from. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I know you have posted about Catherine’s The Bakers’ Lounge before. She had a spot, got robbed a number of times, had to move, found a new location, lost the new location, got it back. Found money to renovate. Then her contractor left without finishing the job. She has had a long run of bad luck. Through it all she keeps baking. She’s made a ton of my children’s birthday cakes, and pies for Thanksgiving, you name it. She hosts a toddler and mommies tea for free once a week. And donates baked goods to lots of events.

Anyway, DCRA inspected her location yesterday, and shut her down because of the minor things that had not been completed by the contractor, who ghosted her.

She needs $2000 to finish the work. I set up a GoFundMe page for her here.

She and her company are a valued member of the NEDC community and I hope we can come together to save her shop.”
