“Dear PoPville,

I know you have posted about Catherine’s The Bakers’ Lounge before. She had a spot, got robbed a number of times, had to move, found a new location, lost the new location, got it back. Found money to renovate. Then her contractor left without finishing the job. She has had a long run of bad luck. Through it all she keeps baking. She’s made a ton of my children’s birthday cakes, and pies for Thanksgiving, you name it. She hosts a toddler and mommies tea for free once a week. And donates baked goods to lots of events.

Anyway, DCRA inspected her location yesterday, and shut her down because of the minor things that had not been completed by the contractor, who ghosted her.

She needs $2000 to finish the work. I set up a GoFundMe page for her here.

She and her company are a valued member of the NEDC community and I hope we can come together to save her shop.”

From an email:

“The Georgetown Events family is devastated by the heartless and cowardly act of violence against our beloved friend, partner and colleague, Christian. [partner/general manager at Millie’s in Spring Valley] He is the loving father of 9 month old Frances, the husband of my wife’s sister Molly and the son of the wonderful Broder family of Atlanta. He is in critical condition in intensive care fighting so hard to live. The staff at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta has worked around the clock since Sunday performing one miraculous surgery after another to keep Christian alive. Please pray for him. A gofundme page has been set www.gofundme.com/supporting-christian-broder

Wed Jul 11, 2018 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Moreland’s Tavern
5501 14th Street, NW

Join us for a fundraiser for Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), which defends the rights of child immigrants and refugees. Donate now (by buying a ticket), and then come to Moreland’s on July 11 for drinks and company!

**UPDATE: DC Brau has generously donated a keg of El Hefe Speaks to the cause! So, your first beer is on them. Many thanks to both DC Brau and Moreland’s Tavern for supporting this important cause.**

As you know, in the past few months, the government forcibly separated more than 2,000 immigrant children from their parents and placed them in shelters along our southern border. While that practice has ended, there’s no clear plan for reuniting those children with their families. And additional children — many seeking asylum — are now being detained, with their families, in jail-like settings.

The situation remains grave. (more…)

From Nathan Zeender, Head Brewer and Co-Owner Right Proper Brewing Company:

“My best friend and I are currently fundraising and building a mobile, off the grid winery to make low-intervention wine and cider. This is a true passion with no salaries or employees and I will remain the head brewer at Right Proper.”

From Kickstarter:

Hibernaculum Winery Build

The Goal

Build a self-contained, mobile winery inside a repurposed 20 foot shipping container. This high-design, solar powered sun vessel will act as the home for a small and personal low-intervention wine project called Hibernaculum. The winery will function off the grid and not be connected to utilities.”

All the details on the kickstarter. Good luck gents!

“A Vegas Wedding for Charity at the Hot Dog House of Matrimony THURSDAY, JUNE 21st 2018

Ivy and Coney, located at 1537 7th St NW and DC’s #1 Underground Engagement Ring Reseller for five years running, is proud to present it’s latest creation, Vegas Wedding at the Hot Dog House of Matrimony. In a year where the world has turned its attention to nuptials across the pond, we are here to remind people of America’s greatest contribution to marriage, being wed on the fly with no regard for any sort of commitment or future together. Nothing shows our freedom and frivolity more than by getting married to that stranger you met at the casino four hours ago with a ceremony overseen by Elvis as your closest slot machine friends cry and hoot and holler. And we will not stand for this English aggression on our limited attention spans. This most splendid of occasions started on May 19th (there’s nothing happening that day, right?) and concludes on June 21st with an all out debaucherous final “reception” for charity.

ON JUNE 21ST, The Lord Lieutenant Head Groundskeeper, invites you to cap off this shitshow extravaganza with our annual Charity Gala in support of Bread for the City. All commoners welcome! There will be craps. There will be champagne. There will be blackjack. There will be fantastic raffle prizes. And hopefully, fingers crossed, we will all get to enjoy in the wedding of the first random couple crazy enough to participate in this nonsense. As in years past, 100% of tips and call proceeds go to our amazing friends at Bread for the City, helping them do great work for those in need in DC. TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED HERE. (more…)
