Tricia McCauley Memorial Herb Garden Planned for LeDroit Park – Needs Your Support

From an email: “A group of us in Bloomingdale are attempting to raise funding to support construction of the Tricia McCauley Memorial Herb Garden in LeDroit Park, with construction scheduled to begin early in the New Year.”

For those not familiar with Tricia you can read about her tragic story here. She was a beloved member of Bloomingdale and so many other communities. RIP.

The fundraiser says:

“Friends and family of Tricia McCauley, in partnership with Common Good City Farm, are honoring her legacy through the creation of the Tricia McCauley Memorial Fund. “A Benefit for Gun Safety in honor of Tom Marmet: Thanksgiving Weekend” at Roofer’s Union in Adams Morgan

“As many of you already know, Tom Marmet, the son of Roger Marmet – one of Roofers Union’s owners – Roger Marmet, was killed in a senseless act of gun violence on October 24th, 2018.  Tom was driving home from his fellowship as a social worker at SOME (So Others Might Eat) and hit by gunfire when he passed an alley in the Trinidad neighborhood.  Tom, 22, was a great young man who I had the fortune of watching grow up as he worked with us at Ripple Wine Bar when school allowed.

We are all extremely saddened by this loss and find ourselves looking for ways to speak and act out against senseless gun violence in DC.  First on the agenda, will be over Thanksgiving weekend (11/23-11/25) when Roofers Union will dedicate the weekend as a benefit to Tom Marmet and all the other victims of gun violence in DC.  On Friday November 23rd, we will be joined by many Tom’s friends and representatives from Everytown for Gun Safety. This month CAIR Coalition is focusing the spotlight on our Detained Children’s Program and the clients we serve through our Third Annual Noviembre de Ninos: Stand Up with Immigrant Youth!

Over 40,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended at the United States’ southern border in  FY 2017. CAIR Coalition’s Detained Children’s Program provides crucial legal services to this population, many of whom are severely traumatized by the violence they have experienced or witnessed in their home country, and are eligible for legal immigration relief in the United States. We are inspired by the youth we serve and we are taking this month to focus on how we can all work together to better meet their needs. We are asking you, our community, to spread the word and join us in Standing Up with Immigrant Youth this November. (more…)

I volunteer with Charlie’s Place, a tremendous DC homeless program in Dupont Circle that provides meals and counseling to the homeless in the neighborhood. I’m hoping the PoPville community can come through as usual to show this little DC charity some Thanksgiving love. We need donations of food or funds to provide their Thanksgiving meal – see the list above.

Thought you should report on this senseless killing of a family man in NE last week.

He was the husband of the long-time, beloved pre-k teacher at Stoddert Elementary. A go fund me has been started to support the family as well.”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, in the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast.

At approximately 10:37 pm, members of the Sixth District were flagged down at the listed location for a stabbing. Upon arrival, members located an adult male suffering from a stab wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. After all lifesaving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 53 year-old Curtis Barnum, of Southeast, DC. (more…)
