“Tom Marmet, 22, was tragically killed yesterday…apparently caught in crossfire or a random bullet”

From an email:

“Tom Marmet, 22, was tragically killed yesterday afternoon. Tom was driving from his job as a social worker at So Others Might Eat (SOME) Conway Center in Anacostia, Tom was returning to his way to his apartment at The Gandhi House, SOME’s housing for their five fellows and where Father John Adams lives with them in Brookland. Tom was driving on 17th Street, NE at approximately 6pm he stopped at a traffic light at the intersection at Bladensburg Road. There were sounds of gunfire reported, and Tom was apparently caught in crossfire or a random bullet. Tom was hit by gunshots while at the light. He was taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center where he arrived at 6:21, he was pronounced dead at 6:25pm.

Tom grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He attended The Maret School in Washington D.C. and graduated in 2014. He graduated from The University of Vermont in May, 2018. After graduation he began dedicating his life to the service of others through social work. He loved helping other people, particularly his clients at the Conway Center of SOME. Tom was a bright, warm, caring, and thoughtful young spirit. Like so many other people killed by violence, his life was cut short at far too early of an age.

Tom’s family, friends and neighbors share a sense of confusion to understand why this happened . They are actively supporting the police to find the people responsible for this senseless – but all too common – tragedy. Anyone with information is urged to contact Metropolitan Police Detective Brian Wise or anyone at the Homicide Division.”
