From the 9:30 Club:
“Every 9/30 Day, the 9:30 Club takes a moment to celebrate the fans who come through its doors in record numbers, celebrating the communal role music plays in bringing everyone together. This year, the 9:30 Club is partnering with So Others Might Eat (SOME) as they face critical food shortages while residents and businesses band together to “Free DC”, working together to “Protect Home Rule and achieve self-governance for our community.”
To help, the 9:30 Club will be hosting a food drive and raffle this 9/30 Day, September 30, from 10 am to 7 pm, to accept non-perishable donations from SOME’s wishlist (see below), while also celebrating the relaunch of its limited edition “2:02” t-shirts, with all proceeds going to the Free DC project. “Dear PoPville,
The local DC senior dog rescue I volunteer with, Miri’s Haven, is doing a Taylor Swift-themed fundraiser leading up to the release of her 12th album launch on October 3rd. Each day leading up to the launch, we’re posting one of our senior rescue dogs dressed up as one of Taylor’s Eras (photos attached of our first three releases!). (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to draw your attention to a story in our neighborhood of a local father taken into ICE detention one week ago today.
We have started a GoFundMe and are focusing on media attention while we work to bring him home. His family is very brave and have been willing to go on camera to draw attention to this injustice.
On Monday, September 8th, Gerson López Funes, was stopped by MPD at 13th and Farragut for a supposed traffic infraction while traveling home with is family in Washington, DC. Within minutes of the traffic stop (more…)

Thanks to Megan for sharing the GoFundMe:
“The PTO of Ida B. Wells Middle School and the PSCO of John Lewis Elementary School are reaching out as neighbors and fellow Ward 4 community members who care deeply about the Hernandez family.
On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, after dropping his child off at John Lewis Elementary School, our neighbor and friend was suddenly detained by federal agents on his way to work. He has been held at a detention center in Chantilly, Virginia for one week and has since been moved to a detention center in Texas. His wife has only been able to speak with him twice.
The family has called Petworth home for the past eight years. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
One of my daughter’s daycare teacher’s husband was detained by ICE this week. Sharing the family’s GoFundMe. This family has been such a pillar in our NW DC community the last five years and I want to show up for them in any way I can. Thank you.”
The GoFundMe says:
“Today, our family is going through one of the hardest times we could ever imagine. My husband, Ludwin Oliverio Ramírez, father of our daughters Sophia, Madeline, and Maya, was detained by ICE. Oliver has lived in this country for over 22 years. During all this time, he has worked tirelessly, contributed with dedication and love, and has been an active and supportive part of our community. Thanks to Vandy for sending the GoFundMe:
“Beloved musician and legendary saxophonist Ron Holloway has been a staple in the DC music scene for over 50 years. He has been a member of the Warren Haynes Band, Susan Tedeschi, Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Scott-Heron and Root Boy Slim. Since 2014, Ron Holloway has led his own band- The Ron Holloway Band, and over the years has been a special guest for dozens of bands ranging from rock to jam to jazz, bluegrass, funk, and everything in between.
He has made such an impact on his hometown of Washington, DC and the Jazz world that his image is immortalized in the D.C. Jazz Heroes Mural in D.C.’s Shaw Neighborhood (located at 624 T Street next to The Howard Theatre). In 2019, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton presented Holloway with a plaque from the US House of Representatives recognizing his “steadfast dedication to promoting and preserving music in Washington D.C.”
In February 2025, Ron was hospitalized due to complications from an October 2024 injury. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Simple Bar & Grill, a Brightwood institution for over 12 years (& located just north of Petworth on Georgia Ave) has had to close its doors. Over the years, Wilfredo and the whole Simple team tirelessly supported area families and businesses, DC’s LGBTQ+ community, local music & arts scenes, & more. As they are now faced with financial challenges due to the unexpected closure, I’ve started a GoFundMe to help with the unforeseen expenses.”
