Friday Question of the Day – Favorite Homegrown DC Business?

On Wednesday when we spoke about Starbucks coming to Brookland and Filter Coffeehouse had a great reply on twitter:

“@PoPville yup, were pretty “excited” about it. Maybe we’ll put it out of business like we did at 1919 Penn Ave NW… Bring it”

I loved that response and it got me thinking about other locals that I love – thankfully, there are many. So I thought it’d be a fun Friday Question to highlight some of our favorites. It can be a restaurant, bar, coffee house, clothing, artist, really any type of retail – it just has to be local. So who are your favorite businesses born and bred in the District (or inside the Beltway)?

“Dear PoPville,

We had made dinner reservations and were having a hard time finding parking. We were five minutes past our reservation time so we decided to just pull into a garage and park. It was an early dinner because of some travel, so a lot of the street parking wasn’t open yet.

At first we didn’t see anyone in the attendant booth at the garage, and then we saw the attendant stand up. He was clearly doing his evening prayers as he bent back down again and so forth a few times. (more…)

Friday Question of the Day? Would you like to see changes in the Visitor Parking Program?

“I received this survey via email today and then when I completed it I was able to see all of the current responses. Not sure if that is on accident or in the interest of transparency!”

It’s interesting to see the results. So since we seem to have parking on the brain this week – for today’s question – would you like to see changes in the Visitor Parking Program or do you like it as is? If you’d like changes – what would you like changed? Would you pay for a VPP pass? If so how much would you pay per year? For those who have them now, how often do you currently use them?

Friday Question of the Day – Last Great Movie You’ve Seen?

Time for one of my favorite questions (stay tuned for some reading recs soon too) – with a little one grabbing a bit of attention at the home front I’ve fallen way far behind on the movie scene. And I love movies so I’m eager to hear some recommendations for ones I need to catch up on. So let’s say the last 6 months – a year, what movie(s) do I need to see. Let’s narrow it down to top three. Thanks!

Is it too late to talk about H Street and Gentrification?

Since a lot of folks have been sending me emails about these “A Gentrified DC” taggings up and down H Street, NE now’s as good time as any to talk about them.  I remember similar themed taggings on 14th Street in Logan Circle/U Street when that ship had already sailed far from the port.  It feels like H Street is in a very similar situation today. Do you think there can still be a productive conversation about gentrification and H Street, NE?  How about the revitalization of H Street, NE?  I suppose it depends how you define each word, if anyone wants to take a crack at that…

Speaking of which, if you do consider H Street gentrified – does that make Ben’s Chili Bowl a gentrifier too?

Do you think these taggings are a call to action for H Street specifically?  Have you seen them in other neighborhoods? Looking up the hashtag #iwillnotbemoveddc it appears to have been started by some folks from the nomad yard collectiv, originally located near Union Market, who can now be found in Mulebone at 14th and V St, NW.

Friday Question of the Day – Do You Have Allergies? Are they Particularly Bad this Year?

Here’s a random one that I’m just curious about because I’m getting absolutely thrashed this year (despite the drastic up and down temps.) So who else suffers from seasonal allergies? Are you also getting hit particularly bad this year? Any remedies beyond pharmaceuticals and neti pots?

WAMU reported:

“A group funded by an anonymous corporation registered in Delaware is pushing to legalize gambling in the District, first by creating a site in downtown Anacostia where people could play poker, blackjack and other card games and then by licensing other such facilities throughout the city.”
