“On April 14th, in the middle of the night, two dear members of our community lost everything due to a tragic fire in their home. Aresa and her six-year-old daughter, C’Mya (from Mundo Verde Calle 8 first grade), just experienced a life-altering tragedy which they are still mourning and processing. It all happened so fast, and if it weren’t for the neighbor’s pounding on their door in the middle of the night, things could have been much worse. By the grace of God, the entire family is safe, however, the family only has what they were wearing that night. Their home is deemed a total loss, including the loss of C’mya’s pet cat – Benji. “Hello, I am Yeira Melara, a 21-year-old who recently experienced a life-changing event. On April 14th at 12:40 am, our house caught on fire. It was a terrifying moment as my two brothers and I smelled smoke coming from my room. We rushed to find flames already engulfing the area. In a panic, I tried to douse the fire with water, but it spread rapidly. Next thing I see the fire spreading to my bed the flames started to get bigger and bigger. In the panic I tired to find the fire extinguisher but I wasn’t able to locate it. I started panicking until my 17 year old brother told me “yeira it’s too late we have to go” I knew in that moment that I had no choice but to evacuate… (more…)

“2 Alarm Fire 1200 block M St NW. Fire involving 8th floor apartment in 9 story occupied apartment building. Had mayday call for firefighter in distress being resolved. A victim has been located in fire apartment. We continue to evacuate residents in distress.”

“Update 2 Alarm Fire 1200 block M St NW. Fire knocked down. We continue to rescue residents in distress, including thru use of our aerial tower. This building contains many seniors. Dealing with smoke conditions on floors above. The mayday was safely resolved.”

Lucy sends at 8am: “Was out for a run this AM when I saw the hut had gone up in flames.”

“Update kiosk fire Lincoln Memorial Circle NW. Continue to wet down kiosk. Propane tanks have been secured. The victim has been flown to an area trauma center with serious non life threatening injuries. Media staging is at French Dr. and Lincoln Memorial Circle.”
