And here’s the final big news from Friday:

“Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced the selection of Roadside Development LLC and Sorg Architects to redevelop the historic Grimke School at 1923 Vermont Avenue NW and an adjacent District-owned parcel at 912 U Street NW.

“I am delighted that we have selected a team that will preserve the Grimke School as a historic anchor in the U Street/Shaw area while also creating a world-class home for the African-American Civil War Museum and a new arts-and-cultural center for the District,” said Mayor Gray. “This team’s vision for Grimke will further boost U Street’s vibrant cultural amenities.”

The Roadside-Sorg team will rehabilitate the historic school building, while transforming it into mix of uses which include a permanent home for the African-American Civil War Museum, space for a number of non-profit performing-arts organizations, and commercial office space. The remainder of the school lot will be developed into townhomes while the lot at 912 U Street will be developed into condominiums and ground-floor, neighborhood-serving retail space. Roadside/Sorg’s proposal includes a diverse mix of uses and will create approximately 125 jobs in the area. This will promote daytime use of the site, which will complement the already burgeoning food and entertainment district in the area. (more…)

Mission’s website says:

“In the heart of the District’s most vibrant neighborhood: 51 incomparable boutique apartments beautifully arranged within the historical context of a 1920’s era Studebaker car dealership and three 1880’s townhouses. The Mission marries an industrial and rustic vibe with refined sensibilities to create a place where you will want to spend time even if you don’t have the time.”

Check out the floor plans and pricing here.

I took a peek inside the former Central Union Mission (now located in the newly renovated Gales School near Union Station) and future home of Shinola (currently in a temp space across the street), have a look inside the new apartments:

9th and L Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

So as far as exciting news goes this is pretty awesome for the development of the 9th Street corridor.

The long vacant buildings along 9th and across L Street NW are up for a zoning hearing. I was bored at work and mapped all the lots (very bored)! LOL.
The zoning notice says a Residence Inn and Courtyard by Marriott.

This development includes 1116 – 1104 9th St., 911 to 929 L Street NW AND two parcels behind 919 L St NW that have a Shepards Court NW address.”

Could be the biggest thing after the proposed 11th Street Bridge elevated park.

From a press release:

The nonprofit Arts Coalition for the Dupont Underground (ACDU) announced today that it has signed a 66-month lease with the District of Columbia’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) for an abandoned 75,000-s.f. former trolley station below the streets of Dupont Circle, in the District’s Northwest quadrant.

The ACDU also announced today the launch of a crowdfunding campaign for the project on the Fundable platform: fundable.com/dupont-underground.

Founded by architect Julian Hunt, co-principal of Hunt Laudi Studio, a D.C.-based architecture and urban design firm, the ACDU has been negotiating with DMPED for the lease since the group won a 2010 RFP from the city to redevelop the space. Hunt, who moved to the District in the mid-1990s and has been working to reopen the platforms and tunnels for more than a decade, was inspired by the years he spent living and working in Barcelona, where architects and artists have played a crucial role in shaping that city’s physical and cultural growth.

“I didn’t find the same kind of energy and conversation going on here,” said Hunt. “My first effort was to launch a critical journal, but when I discovered the old trolley station, I realized that I had stumbled onto a compelling, vital place to make something happen right below one of the District’s iconic public spaces.” (more…)

From a press release:

“On Monday, December 15, EastBanc, Inc. will break ground and begin construction on the highly anticipated West End Library and Fire Station project at 2301 L St, NW. The official groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public and hosted by DC Mayor Vincent Gray and numerous city officials and community leaders.

Plans for EastBanc’s West End Library and Fire Station development project call for a new 21,000-square-foot library and 7,300 square feet of retail topped by 164 market-rate units – 71 condos and 93 rentals – and a new fire station topped by 55 affordable units and Squash on Fire — a state-of-art squash facility with eight courts and full-service restaurant.

On March 11, 2010 Mayor Fenty selected EastBanc W.D.C Partners to redevelop the District’s West End Library, Police Special Operations Building, and Fire Station. Over the last several years, EastBanc worked closely with Mayor Gray’s administration and the community to plan, design, and entitle two buildings to house a new library, residential condominiums, and retail space on Square 37, and a new fire station with affordable housing above, on Square 50. The company is committed to bringing more residents to the West End neighborhood, expanding retail offerings and delivering world-class architecture. EastBanc has engaged world-renowned architect Enrique Norten of T.E.N. Arquitectos of Mexico City to design both buildings.

Both complexes are being built as a public-private partnership between the District of Columbia, EastBanc, The JBG Companies and Clark Enterprises. The project has received enthusiastic support from the DCPL, DCFEMS, ANC 2A, U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the West End/Foggy Bottom communities as a whole.”
