I have been renting an apartment that uses third-party billing (Conservice) to manage the building’s utility fees for several years. I recently moved out to my own place and I added someone to my lease so that she could take over, but there was a one-week gap between me moving out and her moving in. I’m a foreigner and I didn’t know that utilities need to be in the residents’ name at all times, so now I have received a Conservice bill of US$75 for this period (US$50 “vacant service fee” and US$25 “vacant electric fee”). My family decided on take out pizza last night after we finished rugby practice with Washington, DC Youth Rugby. My wife phoned the order in to Pete’s and I drove over to Pete’s to pick it up and drive home. Fairly normal until I arrived at the restaurant and saw a note on the door from the restaurant explaining they now charge 20% for diner eating at Pete’s, and 10% for take out orders. This was their response to Proposition 82.

I’m ok with the 20% charge for diners staying at Pete’s to eat. That’s what I would have tipped anyway.

10% for take out orders is crazy though. (more…)

Wanted to let the community know about a string of robberies that happened last night in Adams Morgan. A group of us were walking up Columbia NW at 2am around Gelmarc towers and saw two guys who had just been held at gunpoint and had their phones and wallets stolen. We were standing there helping them call their banks and the same car pulled over AGAIN, and held up our group. (more…)
