“Dear PoPville,

Fireworks from 8pm to 12:30am

Last year one of my dogs became stressed out from the fireworks and ran away. She was returned after a neighbor received one of 900 postcards I mailed out.

Saturday night I was frustrated and felt trapped in my own rowhouse from all the craziness. Fireworks were constant in my neighborhood for over 4 hours. Is there a solution for Metro PD? There has to be something man. One of my dogs has PTSD from all the noise. I love this city and our country, but people here are crazy with the fireworks man. Saturday night was not safe on my street..

I am open to your suggestions.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have friends coming to visit from San Francisco in a couple of weeks and I (not so secretly) want to convince them to move here. Since SF has most places beat when it comes to hip and trendy, I don’t want or need to show them how “cool” we have become here in the District. Rather, I just want to showcase the best, uniquely-DC things that we have to offer! What things should we do to show them a good time?

Ed. Note: Here’s some recs from 2012 but could definitely use a refresh!

“Dear PoPville,

Less than a year ago, I bought a condo in a small building. The building is so small, that ALL of us are on the condo board. I’m a rather young homeowner, and a woman, while the other board members are older and male. I think they are used to running things their way without much opposition. Despite dedicating hours of my time to solving issues with THEIR units and tenants, I feel like my concerns are consistently ignored. The first time I questioned why I was being forced to participate in resolving issues with their units, they told me that there was a legal liability in not addressing it as a condo board. Since then, the threat of “legal liability” seems to be constantly held over my head to bully me into agreeing to their demands.

Recently, I demanded that if we continue to make decisions based on protecting ourselves legally, we need to be talking to a lawyer. I pushed back on some of the issues my co-board members brought up, mostly pointing out that we are not legal responsible for doing most of the things they claim. I think my condo board members think I can’t possibly know as much as they do, but I have quite a bit of experience in the DC housing code, tenants rights, and so on. I know my rights and responsibilities and I’m not going to be afraid to express them. Before this point, my demands were acknowledged but not met. Now, my attempts to communicate, on any issue at all, have been met with radio silence. I’m paying my condo fee. I’m at a loss about what to do and how to get a response out of the board.

If need be, I’m willing to pursue legal action, since the threat of legal retaliation seems to be the only thing this group of people understands.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a six-story historic condominium in Dupont Circle and we are considering building a deck on our roof. The views would be great, and folks are excited about the possibility, but also nervous about the cost and any possible unforeseen construction issues.

Have any PoPville readers thought about, or actually added, such a roof deck. Some of our questions are about size, as zoning rules require us to build small or create a second roof exit. We would welcome any recommendations about contractors or architects. Finally, we would love to hear about any successful projects, as well as any horror stories of course.”

A reader writes:

“This was stuck in my front door in Truxton Circle. This seems like a total scam. What say you and your readers?”

Ed. Note: Their website says:

“Our mission is to provide safe, legal and affordable access to medical marijuana for DC residents suffering from chronic illnesses. We serve as advocates for those seeking treatment with medical marijuana and work closely with our customers, medical providers, dispensaries and the DC Department of Health to ensure our clients receive the most discreet and dignified care possible. Entrance into our program grants clients access to a physician who may recommend medical marijuana.”

Good folks? Good business folks? Something else?

“Dear PoPville,

Hi everyone – We would like to thank all of you for your kind words and support since we lost our puppy Pip on April 12. As you’ll recall, she was hit by a car while on a walk during a weekend boarding at Wagtime. We’ve spent the past few months trying to learn more about what happened and discussing our next steps. We want to share with you today that we’ve filed a lawsuit against Wagtime and its owners. You can read the complaint below.

Complaint against Wagtime (PDF)

As you’ll see, we were disturbed to learn of many discrepancies between eyewitness accounts of the accident and what Wagtime’s owners told both us and the police about the circumstances of Pip’s death – where and how the accident occurred, who was walking our dog, whether she was wearing her proper harness and leash and even the condition of our dog when she was transported to the vet. We were told that Pip had survived the accident and was alive (but laboring), when in fact we learned later that she died at scene. We hope you’ll read the full details in the complaint. It’s been heartbreaking for us to have to spend the months following our dog’s death having to piece together what really happened, but it’s very important to us that the truth gets out.

Thank you again for all of your support. – Julie and Mike”

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday on my way home after picking up my 18 month old from day care, I found myself dealing with a person with some serious road rage.

Long story short, the guy kept cutting me off and tried to run me off the road at least 3 times. I called 911 and naturally the guy took off, but I decided to wait for an officer to come so I could show him the footage from my dash cam. Unfortunately the officer said it seemed like another case of aggressive driving and that they couldn’t do anything about it unless they saw it happening right there and then, so he didn’t want to see the dash cam footage.

Not sure if this is policy? I thought DC was cracking down on aggressive driving?

Anyway, I’m including a couple of stills from the incident… hopefully no one else has to deal with this nut job.”

“Dear PoPville,

My boyfriend and I rent the basement unit of one of the row homes on this street. Sunday night, at approximately 5:50, my boyfriend noticed an odor in our unit and went to investigate. He went to our bathroom and saw dirty water coming out of the drain in the bathtub. Water was also coming out of the toilet. In addition, water was pouring out of the storm drains outside our front and back door – so much so that there was approximately 6 inches of standing water at one point. Some of this water leaked through the doors and into our apartment. We were fortunate that he was home and we were able to clean up the water immediately, with little damage. I’ve heard our neighbors were not so lucky. Our landlords and other residents immediately called 311. To my knowledge, no one from 311 responded to these calls – certainly, no one from any city agency came to our unit to investigate.

This is particularly troublesome because approximately one year ago, the apartment flooded while I was on vacation – requiring my landlords to make extensive renovations. It was later learned that DPW had not cleaned the leaves out of the sewers, as they are required to do, so the sewers were backed up. When it rained, water poured into my unit from the bathtub and the toilet – just as it did Sunday, damaging the floors and floor coverings. Just as troubling, my landlords told me they called DPW a few weeks ago to inquire as to when the sewers would be cleaned and received no response. Similarly, I was told that neighbors called 311 to inform them that just last week, following the heavy rain, there was significant standing water on 10th Street. To the best of my knowledge, there was no response to their inquiry either.

I’d love to hear suggestions on how to get DPW to respond to this now reoccurring problem. The fact that it affects our entire block leads me to believe it’s related to the sewer/water lines and not the individual units. I’ve contacted Rep. Evans and our ANC reps, but additional suggestions are welcome.”
