“Dear PoPville,

This came up at a dinner party this weekend, and I was wondering who has had the same experience in/around DC.

For the past year, I have used Zipcar as a way to get around on the weekends. Having used it at least 20 times, I can honestly say the cars REEKED of pot 16 of those times (I’m talking properly hotboxed for an entire Pharcyde album type-smell).

Other guests at the dinner agreed and one couple even mentioned they stopped using the service altogether because they now have kids.

Zipcar needs to address this problem and come up with solution. I’m not against pot, but I am against paying for a relatively ‘premium’ service that lets me down almost every time because of a nauseating smell I am subjected to.

DC, thoughts?”

“Dear PoPville,

I have an issue I’d like to get some feedback on. I live in a not-to-be-named large building at 14th and Newton run by a not-to-be-named large property management company. I just reached the end of my 12-month lease at the end of December, and I opted to go month to month. The management company is charging me $250/month to go month to month. The fee would be waived if I signed a lease. Is this legal?”

wall

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a semi-detached home and the house I am attached to is currently being renovated. On December 23rd, the contractors began demolition and in the process, knocked down an adjoining wall between our houses about 4-5 feet long. While their home is two stories, mine is three and I can clearly see into their home from my basement because they have knocked all the way down through the floor joists and through the wall into my house.

This is concerning due to the possible structural and asbestos issues this may pose to my home as well as the possibility of mice and rodents entering my home from an unfinished work site.

The lead contractor offered to come over, look at the damage and fix it and seemed very concerned about doing everything he could to rectify the situation but he’s not my contractor and I don’t know that I trust them to perform the work under the table.

Besides calling for an inspection and possible structural engineer, does the PoPville community have any advice for dealing with DCRA? The owners have all of the necessary permits (I checked) and this is a quick flip for profit so I’m sure they don’t want to be tied up with stop work orders and insurance claims.”

“Dear PoPville,

I want to get each of my two nephews, ages 1 and 2, a DC t-shirt for Christmas. They are too big for onesies, so I am look for a tiny t-shirt. I would really to find one with the DC flag and “taxation without representation” on it.

I tried cafepress, but they can’t deliver anything until January. So I am looking for retail. Any suggestions of where I should go to look for these items?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m relatively new to DC and am thinking about giving the online dating world a try. From my experience living in other cities, it seems certain dating apps/sites are more popular in some cities versus others. What app/sites are popular in DC?

Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share my experience with reporting harassment to the DC Taxi Commission. I’m hoping it’ll encourage more people to report poor behavior to the commission, rather than write it off as commonplace, as I almost did.

A couple weeks ago, late on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, I caught a taxi home. Once we were parked in front of my house, the driver propositioned me and there was some inappropriate, unwanted sexual contact. I escaped the situation unharmed.

At first, I wasn’t going to report it because this sort of incident seems fairly common, plus I didn’t think the commission would do anything. But some friends encouraged me to file a complaint, so I did. (more…)

yoga class dc

“Dear PoPville,

My much younger half sister – she’s is 11 years old and I’m 26 – has recently expressed interest in yoga. For one of her Christmas gifts this year, I’d like to buy a yoga class that we can take together, but the only ones I can find online are “Mommy and Me” (i.e., for much younger kids) or for preteens/tweens only. I’m really looking for a class we can take together; maybe something that isn’t necessarily just for kids but would still be kid friendly. A private lesson that’s reasonably affordable would work too. I would be ok with a studio in DC, MD, or VA as long as it’s not too far of a drive. I’d appreciate any/all suggestions from the community!”
