“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if anyone else has been punched during rush hour outside of the Farragut North metro. The first time it happened to me, a couple months ago, I figured it was some kind of weird fluke. The second time, this morning, it occurred to me that this must be a thing someone does frequently – punch commuters in the side? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

The exterior door of my condo unit (the door that goes into the hallway) is not hanging properly in its frame.

Getting in from the outside is requiring pushing in and pulling up on the door while unlocking it.

What kind of contractor do I need to fix this, and can anyone recommend an individual or company?”

“Dear PoPville,

My neighbor has begun a renovation project over a year ago, digging a new full height basement as well as building an additional top floor.

They have permits, however, they have stopped ALL work several months ago leaving a basement excavation that has NOT yet been shored up at the foundation, an unfinished top floor that is rotting away, and a staging area in his back yard which is a total mess. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My neighbor has a baseball sized hole in their roof which allows you to see directly into the second floor of their attached townhouse. They are lovely people but lower income and unable to repair the roof. I’m nervous about water seeping over onto my side and already have some evidence that it has. I’ve already spent a good amount of money from leaks coming into my house from my neighbor on the other side a few years ago and want to prevent it from happening again.

I’m curious what folks have done in this situation. Is there precedent to use constituent funds? Does DCRA have any recommendations?”

“Dear PoPville,

Last night, I was on the metro and went to sit in an empty seat but instead of moving in, the person just stood up making me squeeze past. I was upset at the incourtesy, as I’m sure my body language and heavy breathing made clear. Maybe I made it too clear, since the guy tapped my arm to get my attention. Was our fight about to begin? No, he wanted to let me know that he was sorry about the violence lately (I wear a yarmulke) and just wanted to express his support. I immediately felt like a huge asshole. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My partner and I are planning to adopt a dog from a local shelter/rescue agency in a few months. We’re hoping the PoPville (or AdoPtville) community might be able to provide some advice on the best ways to prepare. We both had dogs growing up and dog-sit regularly for friends and family, but this will be our first pet dog as adults.

There are some obvious supplies we’ll need to pick up, but are there good guides on other ways to prepare available? Recommended vets, dog-walkers, pet insurance, etc.?

Any direction, including past posts with similar conversation threads, would be greatly appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to shoot you a quick note asking if you had heard what’s going on at Rock Creek Golf Course… Apparently they have closed the back 9 indefinitely! I love this course and it’s really tragic to me that it has fallen into such disrepair that they just close half the course because it’s easier (and cheaper) than fixing it. I talked to a couple people at the course yesterday but I couldn’t get a straight answer from anyone about what was going on. Any chance you can help?!”

“Dear PoPville,

Last week, during a 30 min, 3 mile run with my dog, a man passing us from behind us kicked his leg out in a deliberate attempt to kick my dog when he thought I wasn’t looking in his direction and then gave a weird/creepy smile when he realized I was looking. (Where Florida and Sherman Ave merge)

Then about 10 min later on 14th Street, a young woman squatted down in front my my dog while we were waiting at a cross walk and then began jumping/lunging toward her and making noise in blatant attempt to scare her. (She’s obviously lucky that my dog didn’t bite her because that’s a recipe for a dog bite!)

I have taken my dog on countless walks/runs in these areas and never experienced this before. Anyone else experiencing this?!”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently went on vacation for a week and decided to place my mail on hold while I was away. I selected the option to pick my held mail up at the Post Office upon my return. Since I live in an apartment that has very small mail boxes, this seemed like the best route.

I received confirmation through usps.com that my mail was going to be held for the specified dates, followed by a letter of confirmation that I then found in my mailbox before my trip stating the same. (I assumed it was placed there by the mail carrier as it was just a loose piece of paper indicating my confirmation number and that the mail was being held).

Fast forward to the day I’m back from my trip. I check my mailbox and lo and behold there was a bunch of mail jammed into it. “Welp, that didn’t work so great,” I thought, “but whatever, I’ll still go to the post office as I’m sure there is more mail waiting for me there.” (Like I said, my mailbox is small and doesn’t hold that much.)

Nowhere was I given the address or name of which post office had my mail. Not in the confirmation email or in the note that was left in my mailbox. I figured I would just go to the closest PO to me and if my mail wasn’t there they could at least direct me to the correct PO location.

Trip 1 (Tuesday – the day after my “held mail” order was supposed to end): The Post Office on 18th St NW, which is the closest to my apartment. My mail wasn’t there and they informed me that the mail is at 14th and U street.

Trip 2 (Wednesday): (more…)
