“Dear PoPville,

Something has to be done about this section of the protected bike lane along 4th St NE south of Florida Ave (NoMa). The construction crew removed the flexposts and reinstalled them inadequately. The reinstalled flexposts are now providing separation between the bike lanes themselves leaving the northbound bike lane exposed to opposite traffic.”

Ed. Note: I’ll be sure to send this to DDOT to address ASAP.

“Dear PoPville,

There is a couple in the building next door (not even in my building) who wake me up regularly with their fighting, it is getting increasingly worse. I am not concerned about the noise, I am concerned about their safety. It seems to be getting increasingly volatile. At what point do you call the police to report domestic disturbances and possible violence? What is the protocol for this in DC? I haven’t been able to find local resources.
I would be curious to know if your readers have any feedback on this or experience with it in DC.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just finished making a beautiful butcher block countertop for a small basement kitchen. I am having trouble finding someone that can cut out a hole for the undermount sink and faucets. The person does not need to come to my house as I can bring the countertop to the person who does it. Does anyone have any recommendations on someone that can do this for me? Willing to pay and travel!”

“Dear PoPville,

I fully accept that most adults look full-on ridiculous when riding any motorized scooter around town, and I also accept that many folks, especially visitors to our city, aren’t always the most safe or courteous.

That said, I had a total unexpected run-in with a car yesterday while scooting. I was standing at the red light at 8th and G, SE, facing the Marine Barracks. I’m aware that a car is slightly behind me. Light turns green, I proceed ahead, staying to the far right so the car can pass me, even pausing behind a parked car on the opposite side of the intersection so it can pass. It pulls up very close behind me, and I assume it’s to let the car coming the opposite direction get by. So I pull around the parked car and stop again in front of the parked car, again trying to let the driving car go past. And AGAIN, this car pulls up right behind me, even though there is plenty of room. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Sadly it seems bike theft is widely accepted in DC. Bike was stolen from a locked bike room, the police won’t file a report of stolen property until they can review video surveillance. Found the bike being sold on Craigslist and asked the police what to do and they said to check the serial number when we meet the guy. Seems like not the best advice. For now they can file a report of lost property which will take 5 business days. Anyone else have any luck with this sort thing?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m adopting a dog for the first time and have a question for the community: how do you take care of your dog’s paws?

The pavement can get very hot in the summer, and ice and salt can cause issues in the winter. As a recovering midwestern suburbanite, I need to know how to take care of the pooch’s paws when I walk him every day on hot, icy, or salty pavement.”

“Dear PoPville,

Did a quick search on the site but couldn’t find anything relating to good places for guitar lessons (for adults) in DC – Trying to pick up a new hobby and teach myself, but wasn’t sure if people had any good suggestions for places to take lessons?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a writer and my books have been translated into several foreign languages. These editions get mailed to my house, and while it’s nice to keep a copy or two of each, I don’t need 5 or 6. I can’t bring myself to throw them away, but I’m not sure where to donate them. So, any ideas? Is there a local charity or agency or business that takes foreign-language editions of books? If it helps, they’re popular science books, written for a general audience.

I should note that I’ve already donated all the extra Spanish editions, so I’m fine there. Otherwise I have books in French, Italian, German, Hebrew, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Turkish, Czech, Estonian, and Japanese.

Thanks, People o’ PoP!”

“Dear PoPville,

I want to share a concerning incident I had in a Lyft last night. My mom (who is visiting from out of town) and I were going to a nearby restaurant, about a ten minute drive. I did the standard license plate check to make sure it was the right car. Right away the driver started doing strange things. He braked really abruptly several times (in the middle of streets, not in traffic or at lights/signs) and was mumbling to himself. He also stopped in the middle of a street and then proceeded to drive super slowly down the street while cars were honking behind him. My mom and I were just chatting in the back about mundane things when he suddenly slammed on the brakes in the middle of Sherman Ave and jumped out of the car, opened the trunk, slammed the trunk down, opened my car door and started screaming at me “What are you doing!? Stop doing that! You know what you’re doing!” repeatedly. (more…)
