“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share an experience that has shown me there is still kindness in the world. I work for a large international non-profit and yesterday 70 people were laid off, 10% of employees. I am safe but know many of the employees, including my best friend, whom I’ve worked with for more than 7 years that were impacted. I was angry at the world and went for a run. After 4 miles I was overcome with emotion and stopped at the corner of 16th and S St NW to compose myself. As I was doubled over sobbing, a kind man stopped and walked over to me. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

1) I live in a small co-op and am curious if folks have any examples of good, reasonable COVID guidance that they’ve been using. We don’t have an on-site staff or property manager, so we are a little bit more self-service in the cleaning department and some of the District’s guidance is better suited for larger buildings.

2)I am sympathetic to my co-op neighbors with children, but a couple times each week, some of the families in our building let their kids play together in the common area. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am hoping for more information. I have now been approach, directly, three times by a young lady dressed in a pink coat (generally on a scooter) on 18th street, in Kalorama Park, and in the Parcourse under the Conn Ave bridge. I have not engaged in a conversation since this person is generally either smoking weed in the moment, or carrying a strong weed aroma. When I tried to ignore her while waiting for my takeout order (Los Cuates is killing it!), she refused to leave me alone and ended up verbally abusing me for several minutes before someone else caught her attention. I directly asked her to leave me alone and please stop harassing me on two of these occasions where I was not in a position to simply move along. I have seen this person doing the same to other people elsewhere in the area (on the Calvert Street bridge and down at Conn/Fla Ave intersection).

Has anyone discovered more here?”

Thanks to all who’ve passed on this scammer report from Reddit.

“Dear PoPville,

First, my sincere condolences to those who have experienced involuntary and unwelcome changes in their lives recently — the death of a loved one, sickness, the loss of a job, food insecurity, and more. Those changes are dreadful and extremely sad. I hope things get better soon for those who are hurting.

Second, this is sort of like a Friday question of the day. I’m curious to hear about people making voluntary positive changes as a result of the pandemic. When the current health crisis is deemed less urgent and stay at home orders have lifted, will readers be inspired to make some permanent changes in their lives? If so, what? (more…)

Ed. Note: From this morning’s poll only 2.3% of respondents are staying with extended family members.

“Dear PoPville,

When the current crisis started, I moved my mom, who’s in her 70s, out of her HiRISE condo in Virginia and in to my DC home temporarily. Mom likes her independence and her own space, so it’s been an adjustment having her live here. However, by now we have worked out the day to day routines. Most importantly, she is safe and comfortable, and does not have to risk exposure from other building residents or from heading out for groceries / errands during this pandemic. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I discovered this device attached to a rafter in the basement of our older, recently purchased home in DC. An electrician doing work on other things in our home said he thought it looked like an old-school phone bell and didn’t include any active electrical wires we’d need to worry about. (more…)

TLDR: Runners do or do not have to wear masks? How about for pedestrians? Cyclists?

“Dear PoPville,

I can’t tell if I am being petty or if my anger is justified. I have seen a shit load of runners without masks .. i saw a runner a while back who had a mask in her hand & that makes sense to me.

I don’t think I’d want to run with a mask on the whole time ..

But if a runner passes me going in the same or the opposite direction I think they damned well better get out of my masked way. I am coming close to screaming at the next maskless runner I see.

The first runner I passed did get off the sidewalk & ran around a car or two. So there are some considerate runners.”
