“Dear PoPville,

I am faced with a looming question and I need help. Should I return to school and teach on August 31st or not? Today, there are about 5,000 public school teachers in Washington, DC facing that same question. Countless families are also hoping it is safe, but no one can be sure.

Teachers scour for reliable information as decisions take place above our heads. Important school-related news is released to the public before we are made aware. It feels like, by design, we are the last to know. This keeps us on guard, searching feverishly for the full story about what we are facing in the fall.

My wife and I are expecting a daughter on October 29th, but I am expected to return to school to start teaching on August 31st. I call that date the point of no return as I talk with family and friends. My gallows humor hardly disguises that I am afraid. I fear for students, for colleagues, for my family and myself. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This signage, ‘God Bless America – Back Bill’, is all over Ward 4 (I live in Takoma) and after some quick Google searches and a neighborhood thread we’re still curious what it means and who’s behind it. Any insight?”

“Dear PoPville,

So my apartment building turned off our water for an emergency repair from 9am-5pm today due to a major leak. But our toilets are old school, so even though I did my due diligence and collected water in my bath tub, they do not flush. As a result of us all working from home, this as you can imagine is a major inconvenience. It’s not like there’s a coffee shop I can go to and work today.

Anyone have ideas for a Wi-Fi friendly place one can socially distance with a running toilet? Our building is old and I bet this will happen again.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m considering getting a bike for a few reasons (some pandemic related) but am trying to figure out if it’s feasible to ride to work when work resumes–I don’t want to invest in one and then let it sit in storage if things ever get back to normal. One possible route would take me down Rock Creek Park Trail between Porter St. and Georgetown (or between Calvert and Georgetown, depending on what I find out), and from all my research it’s hard to decipher whether or not this part of the trail is a safe, reliable route for someone on a hybrid/commuter bike during weekday commute hours (i.e. when Beach Drive isn’t blocked to cars). “Dear PoPville,

Not sure if this is being encountered in DC or not, but I wanted to make readers aware of something that’s been going on in Crystal City. For the past month or so these homemade white nationalist stickers have been showing up on parking meters along a one mile stretch of road. Each is different and each is equally disturbing/offensive (these are examples of some of the tamer ones–with offensive language blacked out). (more…)
