“Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a Snow Emergency in Washington, DC beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 31 and going until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2. The District Snow Team is deploying at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 31 in preparation for snow starting early Sunday and perhaps continuing into Tuesday, and the Snow Emergency will allow plow drivers to clear snow emergency routes curb to curb. “Today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement calling on the U.S. Capitol Police to allow sledding at the Capitol tomorrow and next week in anticipation of a snowstorm.

Laura reports around 10:30am on Saturday: “I should’ve known this would happen, but everyone and their mother has come to the DC Costco this morning. Unless you absolutely have to, avoid it at all costs. The back of the line is all the way at the back of the store, snaking through aisles. No social distancing possible. People yelling. It’s madness.”

National Weather Service reports: “Winter Storm Watch in effect late Saturday night through Sunday night for the potential of 5 or more inches of snow. Additional snow is possible Monday and Monday night as well.”

From the Mayor’s Office: “Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she will deploy the District Snow Team at midnight, Sunday, January 31, in preparation for a possible four to six inches of snowfall starting around daybreak Sunday and possibly continuing into Tuesday. (more…)


Thanks to Ron for sending the reminder (and the really good video above) about the anniversary of the tragic Knickerbocker storm disaster. The Washington Post reported:

“By the end of that day…, 98 people lay dead, crushed beneath the fallen timbers and concrete of the roof of the Knickerbocker Theatre. Structurally unsound, it had caved in under the weight of nearly two feet of snow.

Because the streets were nearly impassable, the moviegoers had mostly trudged on foot to the theater at Columbia Road and 18th Street NW. The crowd, which had been snowbound for days, was young and festive. There were many, many children.”

“Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she will deploy the District Snow Team this evening to prepare District streets for one to two inches of snow, as well as the possibility of freezing rain expected tonight. Air and pavement temperatures are expected to remain above freezing overnight and precipitation will change to rain after midnight. The Snow Team will deploy 48 heavy plows (6- and 10-wheel dump trucks) to apply salt to highways, streets, bridges, ramps, and other elevated structures. (more…)
