Following news of Arc’teryx’s Grand Opening this weekend comes more CityCenter news – RareSweets is located in one of the ‘alley’ shops between H and I near where the new Hermes is coming:

“RareSweets?, a bakeshop and specialty dessert company, will open for business on Monday, December 15th at 8:00 a.m. at 963 Palmer Alley, NW, Washington, DC 20001 located in downtown’s CityCenterDC development. After over a year of operating a wholesale and catering business out of the food incubator Union Kitchen, and hosting various pop-ups, RareSweets’ founder and pastry chef Meredith Tomason will open her first brick-and-mortar bakeshop. The menu will offer seasonally driven layer cakes, doughnuts, coffee cakes, mini bundts, cookies, bars, biscuits, ice creams, and other heirloom American confections reimagined for a modern palate.
Tomason, who has held high-profile pastry roles in New York such as pastry chef at Tom Colicchio’s lauded Craft Restaurant, and stints at Tribeca Treats and the famed Magnolia Bakery, was inspired to open RareSweets by her late grandmother, an avid baker, through whom Tomason slowly learned the treasure trove of family recipes dating back several generations. Family recipes for gingersnap cookies and cocoa crinkles have earned a spot on RareSweets’ opening menu, which also features recipes inspired by Tomason’s vast vintage cookbook collection—some dating back to the 1850s.
Tomason has an affinity for fruit forward desserts, and enjoys creating unexpected textures and flavors, relying on raw sugar, nutmeg, and flower essences such as lavender and orange blossom to brighten berries and other fresh flavors. Ed. Note: The 7th street location will be open until the end of year. At that point BicycleSpace will operate out of an interim space in the neighborhood briefly before moving to the new K Street location. Updates on the interim space when they become available.

“Washington D.C.’s award-winning, community-oriented bike shop, BicycleSPACE, is moving from 7th Street NW to a new location at 440 K Street NW, the Lyric apartment building, in Mount Vernon Triangle. The new location will be twice the size of BicycleSPACE’s current shop and will include ample space for its signature community events as well as space for a much larger service department. Patrons will also enjoy great food and drink at next-door neighbor Baked and Wired.

Everyone time we talk about dream retail tenants – REI always comes up. Huge news tweeted by @20002ist last night:
“Big news for NoMa: @douglasdevdc stated tonight at @6c_pze they will soon sign deal to bring flagship REI store to Uline Arena on M St NE.”
Douglas Development’s website says:
“Uline Arena is an exciting office/retail re-development in the burgeoning NoMa neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The 2.5 acre site is located at the intersections of Delaware Avenue NE, M Street NE and 3rd Street NE, with Congress Street NE dying into the property. The property is currently occupied by the Arena building (historic), the Ice House building (historic), and two other commercial buildings, most used as parking structures. The Arena building, best known for being the venue for the first American concert given by The Beatles, is also architecturally significant due to its concrete barrel vault roof and structural concrete arches. The Ice House building is the original ice manufacturing facility which provided ice for the skating rink within the Arena building. It was there where Mr. Uline created his patented equipment which became so successful that the Arena building became necessary.
The currently single-story Arena building will be converted to a single level of retail below three levels of office space. The Ice House building will have additional ground level retail space with a portion of the first level being dedicated to office. Above this will be two additional levels of office space. This will require additional space added to the Ice House building, which will occur in a sleek new glass structure extending above the original roof line of the Icehouse. Additionally, a new 168-space, 4-level parking garage will be constructed on the southeast corner of the site.”
