The Washington Post reported on Friday afternoon:
“Eager to end complaints from the Standard Biergarten in New York, the operators of Standard in the District plan to change the name of their joint to the Garden District, says co-owner Tad Curtz.”
Garden District plant/gardening store was located in the space until they moved across the street in 2009 before ultimately closing in 2011.

Fishnet shared the news on facebook:
“Fishnet is opening a second location at 7th & S streets, NW, DC. Possibly late this year.”
Fishnet’s College Park location is at 5010 Berwyn Road. You can see their menu here. Their website says:
“On the shores of the Bosphorous River, Fisherman rise at the crack of dawn to catch the plentiful fish. They grill the fresh catch straight from the sea and serve it to patrons with onions, lettuce and tomato in a fresh baked bun. This sandwich is traditionally called, ‘Balik Ekmek’ and it is from this popular Turkish delight that the owner draws his inspiration.”
Anyone ever check out the College Park spot?

Back in Oct. 2012 we noted that Pizza Kebab was for sale in Adams Morgan. Looks like they have a buyer – Meat in a Box – serving Kebabs and pizza. You can see their Falls Church menu here. Eater DC reports if they get their permits they could open in as soon as 10 days. Anyone ever try the Falls Church location?

To the uninitiated, hell even to the initiated, the Maine Avenue Fish Market in SW Waterfront can be overwhelming. There are so many choices. So what are your favorite spots in the Fish Market? Any other general advice? See some options after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Have you heard any scuttlebutt lately on what, if anything, is going on with the Mandalay restaurant coming in theory to Shaw? It looks to my untrained eye like it is 90% done, but there has been practically zero visible progress in the last few months. I’ve been to the Silver Spring outpost multiple times and loved it – looking forward to having them so close and hope that this is just a temporary delay!!”
It’s no theory – Mandalay is still coming! I spoke with the owners on the phone who tell me that they are just waiting on final permits and hope to open up by early July. You can see their Silver Spring menu here.

Huge news for U Street. Chef Erik Bruner-Yang from the incredibly popular Toki Underground (1234 H St, NE) is hooking up with the folks from Hanoi House (2005 14th Street, NW) starting July 7th. Not clear if Hanoi House will be changing their name or what exactly will be on the menu but more info as it becomes available. Can’t wait to learn more!

Pizza-Iole opened up next to Frager’s in late 2011. I stopped by last weekend and see they’ve added (a few months ago) a Pho option with a space called Vietnamese Corner. Pho and Pizza seem an odd combination but they both do have cult followings, so who knows maybe it’ll work.
Anyone try the Pho yet?

Back in March we learned Paul Ruppert, one of the owners behind Room 11, was opening two spots in Petworth. Happy to see some progress on one front – the former Island Cafe has now been gutted and the bar is starting to get rebuilt:

Stay tuned.
