Last we checked back in December we knew good things were coming to Lyman’s Tavern coming to the former laundromat space next to Red Derby. Well I got to take a peek over the weekend and holy cow this place is looking sweet. I haven’t been this excited about a new bar since, well, Red Derby opened. I’m happy to say it’s looking like Lyman’s will be a worthy neighbor to the Derby. This is another real deal non pretentious neighborhood bar. The space is dominated by a huge wooden bar. In the back there will be a little stage for music and three pinball machines. In the way way back is a small kitchen. And the best news – they open in March. Stay tuned for an exact date.

They didn’t want me to spoil the surprise by posting photos but here’s a little tease showing the corner of that sweet bar:

From an email:

“I wanted to share that our 7th Street location – the first Nando’s PERi-PERi in the U.S., which opened in 2008 — is getting a much-deserved revamp. The restaurant will be taking a break today and tomorrow. We’ll be back on Thursday and Friday with an all-day happy hour! ($5.95 sangria pitchers; beers from $2.50)

We understand people may be frustrated and going through withdrawals from their favorite cockerel, so we’ll be apologizing outside our door with “Sorry for the Cock Block” vouchers for a free appetizer once we’re back.

We like to make sure each restaurant design is unique, and we use only real and natural materials, so we’re just doing a quick refresh. We’ll be putting in new South African art, changing the seating arrangement, and installing new Coca-Cola Freestyle machines.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just wondering: for the last few weeks, each time I’ve walked by Chupacabra (9th St NE between H and I) – whether early afternoon or evening, it’s been closed. Has it closed down? I didn’t check storefront for a sign, I must admit.”

Yup, there’s a sign out front saying they’ll reopen in March. It’s likely due to the weather turning cold and most of the seating being outdoors. Kinda like how Standard/Garden District closes for winter at 14th and S St, NW.

Last month we noted progress at the renovations in the former Capital City Subs space located next to the future District Doughnut on Barracks Row. They reopened as Caffe Kimchi a couple weeks ago and they could possibly have the greatest omelette in town:

I love kimchi and I love bacon so I’m super intrigued. Anyone try them out yet?

From the Hula Girl Food Truck:

“Ok Hulas – here’s the news – we are doing a ‘pop-up’ for the next few weeks…so you can come get your fix while the truck is off the road!!”

You can check out the Food truck menu here.

The Washington Post reports:

“Pulpo, the Cleveland Park tapas emporium, has officially shuttered…

The Hula Girl Bar & Grill will debut Friday night, a sort of valentine for lovers of Hawaiian cuisine, which one mag recently argued is the “next foodie frontier.” The pop-up is expected to run until mid-March, with a possible week-long extension, says Hansen.”

Updates on the permanent plans for this space when they are known.

Thanks to ‏@enhochman for passing on the great news for Pasta Mia fans. Back in early Jan. there was speculation that Pasta Mia would close at the end of February. Table-Envy shares more details:

“Pasta Mia’s 73-year-old Napalese owner confirmed to a full restaurant tonight that she will not be closing down the popular pasta house on Columbia Road at the end of the month. When asked what her plans were after the restaurant officially closes next year, all she said was, “Oh, maybe I will go to Miami.”
