Sweet new addition to the already awesome Right Proper Brewing Company – Cheese! The former cheese buyer/lead cheesemonger at the now-closed Cowgirl Creamery, Tim Lake, has been at Right Proper since December.
Tim tells me “we’ll be launching a full cheese counter this weekend (4/5) to coincide with new lunch service hours at 11:30am, Sat-Sun. We have about 20-25 cheeses that guests can order on-site as cheese plates, or can have wrapped up for take-out, along with growler-fills. Many of the cheeses are chosen specifically to be paired with the fresh beers on tap.
To start though, guests can expect an array of styles – local, domestic, imported; raw, pasteurized; cow, sheep, goat; mild, funky. Housemade accompaniments (pickles, mustards, pates) are available with cured meats forthcoming.
Lunch service starts at 11:30am and rolls uninterrupted into dinner at 5pm. Saturdays & Sundays for now.”

Mission Mexican restaurant has opened in the former One Lounge space by the Dupont north metro. Oddly, their Facebook page says:
“We suggest taking Ubers or taxi cabs to Mission. Otherwise, Mission is directly across the street from the Dupont Circle Metro Station at 1525 Q Street (Connecticut Avenue & Q).”
Well that’s odd.
But anyway, their website says:
“Welcome to Mission, a restaurant and bar located in Dupont Circle featuring traditional Mexican cuisine from Executive Chef Rodrigo Albarran. Mission’s 6500+ square feet includes two large bar areas, three dining rooms, a spacious outdoor patio and a large private event space with its own bar.
Open at 5 pm daily, Mission will launch lunch and brunch service later in the spring. Mission’s cocktail menu, featuring freshly made cocktails, is available until last call nightly.”
You can check out their menus here.

20th and M St, NW
@rgutauskas tweets us:
“Hey @PoPville look what I spotted at 20th and M! Opening soon, @districttaco?”
Back in Feb. we first heard District Taco would be opening their third District location in the former Cosi space at the corner of 20th and M St, NW. I saw they were hiring a few weeks ago so hopefully the opening will be very soon!

Cool new lunch option for those in Logan Circle – Skillet Sandwich Shop:
“Chef Crafted, Rustic Sandwiches
Located inside Black Whiskey
Operating Hours: Wednesday – Friday, 11am – 2pm, Saturday 11am – 7pm
closed Sunday & Monday”
I spoke with one of the owners of Black Whiskey who says the pop up is indefinite and is from the guy who ran the People’s Bao ramen pop up in Columbia Heights.

We’ve been waiting a long time to see how Compass Rose turned out in the former Collage Cafe space on T Street next door to St. Ex and though I feel like I say this a lot – this one was definitely worth the wait. At least from the looks. This is one of the nicest transformations of a space I’ve seen since Rose’s Luxury on Barracks Row. Though not affiliated there’s gotta be something to having Rose in the name… This one’s a bit smaller but equally as sweet.

You can see some background and what Rose’s Compass used to look like here. This was the spot that had a vision to give the space the feel of an outdoor market place. Stay tuned for an April 12th (5pm) opening – and here’s a boatload of photos to whet your whistle:

Whoa huge news from Urban Turf:
“Eataly has signed a letter of intent for somewhere in the vicinity of 30,000 to 35,000 square feet of retail space at the massive Capitol Crossing project planned for above I-395 of Massachusetts Avenue NW…
Eataly wouldn’t arrive until 2017, at the earliest.”
Holy cow, thank God it’s not April 1st today! We’ve been tracking potential Eataly locations since 2011. For those not familiar with Eataly, you can read about it here. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
