“Dear PoPville,

I went to get lunch at Newton’s Noodles today and they were closed during prime lunch hours without any activity inside or a sign on the door. I am bummed because I love this place. Any idea about what’s going on? It reads like the signs of a business closing to me.”

Newton’s Noodles opened with much fanfare back in October 2013. In response to a query on their facebook page, Newton’s Noodles wrote on November 17th:

“We are moving to a new location. A little smaller of a space that supports both a lunch and dinner business. More info to come shortly.”

Stay tuned.

More big news from Busboys and Poets:

“The Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative (FSFSC) and Busboys and Poets will formerly announce a partnership that will result in a restaurant and hospitality and culinary leadership training institute in Ward 8 on Martin Luther King Ave., SE.

At the press conference, FSFSC will announce that a full service Busboys and Poets restaurant will occupy approximately 7,000 square feet in the building owned and operated by the Ward 8 based nonprofit. It will also highlight its plans to operate a full-scale hospitality and culinary arts leadership training institute and new office space for FSFSC.

The Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative planned this venture with Ward 8 residents in mind. “Employment opportunities in these fields are flourishing – in the nation’s capital, and FSFSC wants to ensure Ward 8 residents are prepared and well equipped to compete for jobs in the field of culinary arts and hospitality,” states Perry Moon, Executive Director of FSFSC. “In addition, Busboys and Poets is bringing a needed amenity to the neighborhood.”

For eighteen years, FSFSC has partnered with residents, agencies, and institutions in the Southeast community to ensure a healthy and positive environment for families. The Hospitality and Culinary Leadership Institute will be one more step in providing resources and tools for residents of Ward 8.”

Back in September we learned that Oki Ramen was going to replace Sala Thai’s small lower level space on M Street just off Connecticut Ave. It’s tough to be noticed in a lower level spot so it looks like Oki Ramen is taking the opposite tact of Denson Liquor Bar – Check out their huge sign. It’s taking a bit longer than a “few weeks” to open but should be soon. Stay tuned.

Update from a reader:

“Oki is open now its been open for a couple of weeks now. It’s a good place the downstairs looks great, i like the vibe.”

Early last year this building was supposed to become home to Mama Put “serving Asian & African inspired food, with an atmosphere for lounging and listening to DJ music or Live Bands”. Recently a new liquor license placard was posted for Hush Restaurant & Lounge saying:

“Tavern specializing in intercontinental food with seating capacity of 250 and total occupancy of 350. Summer garden with 100 seats. Entertainment Endorsement to include cover charge and dancing.”

And just a few storefronts south that proposed tavern with ping pong tables looks to be making progress in the former Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine space:

Looks like the bar is getting framed out:
