Republic Kolache’s website says:

“Kolache, noun • [koh-lah-chee]: a sweet pastry filled with delicious fruit or savory fillings. Originated in the Czech Republic, perfected in Texas, and available soon in the District.”

The owners tell me via email that their first two pop ups will be:

“in Bloomingdale and Arlington. We’ll also be hitting some of the local farmers/flea markets when spring rolls around as well as exploring wholesale options, then we’ll be figuring out our longer term retail plans from there.

Updates when the exact details/dates become available.

JnG-burgers
201 Upshur Street, NW

The Gods are smiling on us. The good news continues to come to Upshur Street and this time on the eastern end near the Old Soldiers Home across the street from the Hitching Post. 201 Upshur Street, NW is the former home to El Limeno and briefly La Joya Steakhouse. Now – J ‘n G Tavern is coming!!! Why three exclamation points? The J and G stand for Jackie and Gordon – the owners of Bar Charley (Dupont), El Chucho (Columbia Heights), Jackie’s and Quarry House (Silver Spring) and the future Little Coco’s (Columbia Heights/14th St Heights/Petworth).

And it’s going to be a real deal casual neighborhood corner tavern!! And there will be a heavy food focus on good burgers!! And it’ll be kid friendly in the early hours (with a small kids menu)!! And it will be casual – read – reasonably priced and accessible to everyone in the neighborhood!! And there will be 16 draft beer lines!! Ok ok you know I get excited easily but I’ll calm down a bit. In addition to 16 draft lines there will be 50-60 more beers available in bottles and cans. There will be over 100 bourbons and rye whiskeys. And because the space was previously a restaurant – they’ll be ready to open in April!!

Ed. Note: For those curious about the status of the coming Italian/pizza tavern, Little Coco’s, in the former Rib Pit Lounge space – it should be ready around late Summer.

Presumably this is the Baked and Wired but the placard posted out front only listed the trade name OutpostDC. The rest of the description says:

“Restaurant specializing in baked goods, light fare, and coffee with a seating capacity of 93. Total occupancy load of 99. Sidewalk Café with a capacity of 86.”

Hours are listed as Sunday through Thursday 7am – 11pm and Friday & Saturday 7am – 12am.

This will be right next door to the BicycleSpace location. Updates when both get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,

Sometimes the issue/question of where to host a large group or party at a restaurant that doesn’t have outrageous room fees or food/bev minimums comes up on your site. So I thought I’d write in and help folks out if it comes up again. Every once in a while I have to plan large group dinner (20 or so people) for work. I work at a trade association for public employees, so when we go out for business dinners we are all on relatively tight budgets and annoyingly need to get individual receipts. This makes finding a restaurant difficult! Last year I discovered that Logan Tavern can accommodate large groups like mine, has no problem charging separate checks, they let you order off the full menu (don’t need to do a set menu), no private room fees, a very reasonable food/bev minimum per person (I think it was like $25/pp for food and drinks) and reasonable cancellation policy. Oh, and the food is good – I think everyone in my group was happy! So if anyone is looking for a place for a large group dinner, this is a good option. (I have no affiliation with the restaurant at all, just a satisfied customer).”

From Mr. Henry’s:

“Last Friday night ushered in a new era of entertainment at Mr. Henry’s Upstairs. The Steve Scott Project killed it and reigned over an awesome impromptu dance party! A great time was had by all. We’re elated to bring live music back to this historic venue. Live music is scheduled on Fridays through January and we are working diligently to add other nights in February.”

From a press release:

“The original location is situated in the heart of Bangkok in a beautiful Thai house built almost 100 years ago during the reign of King Rama VI. The restaurant is named after the great mango tree planted in front of the former house.

Opening Date: January 15, 2015

Hours of Operation: Dinner service from 5 PM to 11 PM
Lunch service from 11 AM to 3 PM (starting Jan 19th)

Menu Description: Mango Tree will serve genuine Thai dishes from each of the four main culinary regions: rich and fully flavored dishes from the North, spicy cuisine from the Northeast, more mild dishes influenced by the Chinese cooking style from the Central region, and hot and spicy cuisine from the South. In each dish, one will find the artful blending of savory, sweet, sour and spice which delivers the harmonious taste in each bite, and Thai food is naturally medicinal, bringing health and vigor to the meal. Menu highlights include Tom Yum, a lemongrass and kaffir lime infused spicy and sour broth with Maine lobster or an array of mixed seafood Massaman Gae, Mussaman curry with slow cooked lamb shank and fingerling potato, and Goong Mung Gorn Phad Phong Karee, baked Maine lobster dressed in yellow curry powder with egg and onion, which has become a signature dish at Mango Tree. Some of the dishes are refreshed for contemporary tastes while others are classics, to be continuously enjoyed for generations.

Have a look inside – this is the upstairs but there is also a bar downstairs that wasn’t quite photo ready:
