Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“My building (1700 2nd st NW) signed dc city smokehouse as the tenant in our retail space. This is the bit from my condo association update:

The Board is excited to welcome DCitySmokehouse to the Association. In short, the much-beloved BBQ shop from down the street is moving into our commercial space. We’re working with them to arrange a time when they can meet the Association and answer questions.

Current location with their, apparently, controversial signage:

The south side of the 400 block of K Street, NW is on a roll. Following BicycleSpace and Baked & Wired comes L’hommage. The liquor license placard posted out front says:

“New French restaurant and bistro with live entertainment during weekend brunch and occasional special events. Background music will be provided. Seating capacity is 170. Total occupancy load is 281. Sidewalk Cafe with seating for 80 patrons.”

L’hommage comes from Hakan Ilhan the owner of nearby Alba Osteria.

Back in June we learned that Sticky Fingers would be opening a 2nd location on H Street, NE. They’ve just applied for a liquor license that says:

“Restaurant serving baked goods, sandwiches, coffee, desserts, birthday cakes, cupcakes, pies and cookies. Seating for 48 patrons and total occupancy load of 120.”

Their current Columbia Heights location is at 1370 Park Rd, NW across the street from Giant. The Columbia Heights spot added booze to their menu back in late 2013. Looks like the H Street location still needs some serious renovations so stay tuned for an exact opening date.

“DC’s first cakepoppery is officially open for business!

To start, we’ll be open from 10am to 7pm daily (closed Mondays), and we’re working out additional morning hours on weekends. We’re still learning the ropes and waiting for a few more pieces of furniture, but the store is beautiful and I hope you’ll love it as much as I do.

We’re planning a Grand Opening celebration in a couple of months, once the weather is nicer and the sidewalk construction has been completed. There’s no need to wait for the party to come say hi and to check out our cakepops and other delicious treats like black & white cookies, rugelach, raspberry bars, and more. And yes, there will also be bagels very soon!”

[in the former PoBoy Shop space on 19th Street just north of M Street] We are finally happy to announce this and hope our customers and new neighbors forgive for the delay. We want to make sure everything is perfect for our guests!”

“Dear PoPville,

Walked by on my way back from lunch, Grand Trunk is having a soft-opening with free samples of their very varied menu… breakfast foods, curries, naan, burgers, salads, tea, smoothies… All in a night-club atmosphere with techno music, chandeliers, flatscreens, etc. I couldn’t get a decent photo through the window due to glare from the sunset or it could have been the glare from the disco ball, mirrored wall paper and central circular bar/tandoori oven (with stools). While I might seem harsh, this place is a sight to behold and thoroughly ridiculous. Words cannot describe it properly.

Would love to hear some other opinions.”

At this point most people agree (as you can tell by the crowds) that Union Market has become a dining destination with new spots continuing to open. I stand by my love for Neopol Savory Smokery. But nevermind debating the food, I wanna talk about the seats. I’m not talking about the regular restaurant seats but the shared seating. What is the etiquette? When I stopped by last weekend there were lots of folks standing around looking for tables and there were lots of people lounging around at tables sipping coffee and/or just reading the paper. Which is cool but there seems to be a seating shortage at least on the weekends. So what do you think is the proper etiquette? Only take a table if you’re actually eating? Or screw it, first come first served and I’m gonna take my time and enjoy? Is there a middle ground?

From an email:

“Toady, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken [1308 G Street, NW] will launch a new menu item: a fried chicken and gravy sandwich, which will be available during breakfast and lunch. The fried chicken sandwich features a piece of fried chicken topped with gravy on a savory doughnut bun. The gravy has a Cajun flair and is made with chopped peppers, onions and celery. The breakfast version of the sandwich is smaller than the lunch version, and is priced at $5.50 and $9.75 respectively. A side of additional gravy is available for $2.00. The breakfast sandwich is available in the morning hours during the week as well as all day on the weekends. The lunch sandwich will only be available during the week.”
