I was gonna ask about your favorite “birthday restaurants” after Obama’s trip to Rose’s Luxury for his but I got depressed about the cost. So let’s revisit cheap eats and this year let’s keep the price point at $10 and below for the “main course”. It can be take out, delivery and/or dine in. Let’s go with top three choices if you can’t narrow it down to one. I’m still sticking with a bowl at Pho Viet (3513 14th St, NW) and a Gyro at Greek Spot (2017 11th St, NW). What’s your favorite cheap eat these days?

momofuku

Back in April we noted that Momofuku had applied for their liquor license. (Total occupancy load is 300. Sidewalk Café with 70 seats.”) Thanks to a reader for sending a progress report on one of the most anticipated openings of the year:

“Late September/early October at the earliest. As you can see from the pictures, the electrical work is done, some of the framing has gone up and some equipment has been moved in. But it’s still got a long way to before it’s going to be ready to accept guests.”

I’m guessing late October/early November opening – updates when an exact date is announced.

A reader reports:

“Hi! Pizza No. 17 on 17th in Dupont closed a few weeks ago for “minor renovations” and it’s reopened as Pasha’s Kitchen. I’m pretty sure the menu, at least some of the pizzas are exactly the same. I haven’t been in to try it, but this was one of my favorite restaurants in DC so I hope it is still awesome!”

The former Rita’s Carryout space officially opened as Esencias Panameñas (authentic Panamanian Cuisine) on Wednesday, July 22. Their website says:

“Esencias Panameñas Restaurant & Catering, unlike a typical Latin cuisine with a Caribbean flair restaurant, will provide a unique combination of authentic Panamanian food at value pricing with a fun and entertaining atmosphere. Chef Yadira is a native from Panama and she pays tribute to her place of birth through traditional dishes made with staple food products, such as corn, coconut, culantro (not cilantro) and rice.

Each quarter we will feature a historic event, a holiday observed, or a tradition upheld in Panama. In addition, we will also feature a fruit, dish, or bake good in season during that quarter”

Anyone already take a taste?
