From a press release:

“Chef Aulie Bunyarataphan and Proprietor Mel Oursinsiri, the dynamic husband and wife team behind a portfolio of the region’s ground breaking Thai restaurants, are proud to announce the return of Bangkok Joe’s. The heartbeat of the “new” restaurant is the much beloved Dumpling Bar, which will serve an expanded selection of hand-crafted delicacies. Exotic tastes and aromas of the Bangkok street food Aulie experienced as a child, along with Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and even French flavors she picked up as a result of her culinary experiences in the United States are featured on the restaurant’s expansive menu. The menu includes a large selection of new dishes incorporating more traditional Thai flavors to appeal to diners expanding palates and openness to trying authentic global cuisines as well as customer favorites. The restaurant will open in March in its original location in Georgetown’s Washington Harbour. A new Happy Hour is planned for early summer. el_tamarindo

A reader reports:

“Curious if anyone knows what is going on at El Tamarindo? I walked by a couple of weeks ago, and they had a health code violation on the door and handmade “Closed” signs on the window. I walked by today and the storefront is papered over, with signs saying they will reopen in April. From the huge dumpsters nearby, it looks like they are ripping out half the restaurant. I can’t imagine that is unrelated to the health code issue?”

Ed. Note: El Tamarindo celebrated their 30th anniversary back in 2012. Also there is a major renovation going on next door at the old De Vinos/Dahlak spaces which may also be using the dumpsters seen. Anyone else hear what’s happening at El Tamarindo. Love ’em or Hate ’em they are definitely an Adams Morgan institution.

hellers
3221 Mt Pleasant Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

The Mt. Pleasant ANC is having a meeting at which they propose supporting a liquor license for Bundle Bit, LLC which is going to occupy the old Heller’s space. Do we know anything about them?”

Bundle Bit, LLC is registered to Nicholas Pimentel.  Back in July we learned that the folks from Paisley Fig bakery would be taking over the space.  As Pimentel is with Paisley Fig (and Bad Saint, Room 11 and others) – looks like those plans are moving forward.  I’m sure lots more info, including the proper name, will be coming out soon! If any9one goes to the ANC meeting please let us know what they say (and email me at [email protected]) thanks!

Thip Khao
3462 14th Street, NW

From a press release:

“On Tuesday, March 29, 2016, from 3:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., the mother-daughter duo behind Toli Moli, Jocelyn Law-Yone and Simone Jacobson, are bringing falooda and Anglo-Burmese snacks to Thip Khao, home of the Lao food movement in D.C. [3462 14th Street, NW]

After Toli Moli introduced nearly 1,000 eaters in D.C. to falooda, the family-owned business continues its mission to sweeten snack time with the introduction of Burmese tea leaf salad and two new falooda flavors: Cherry Blossom and Bourbon-Cassis. The Cherry Blossom dessert drink is layered with mint-apple jellies, apples soaked in homemade cherry syrup, basil seeds, vermicelli noodle pudding and is topped with vanilla ice cream. This unique taste of Spring is pale pink in color, akin to the flowers in full bloom, complete with green “leaves” of gelatin that add a refreshing burst of sweetness to the falooda flavor profile.
