The restaurant is owned by the Ben Ali Family and features new dishes such as stuffed yucca with gouda and guava sauce; a flash-fried oyster po-boy with citrus aioli, garden lettuce and concasse; and whole fried snapper served with coconut mojo and plantains reflecting the Caribbean and Southern influences of the Ali Family’s heritage. The extensive bar offerings include signature cocktails and craft beers on tap. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending word about the coming soon signs for Two Boots Pizza. Their website now says “opening 2017”.

Two Boots — named for the geographical shapes of Italy and Louisiana — was born in the East Village, at 37 Avenue A, on June 24th, 1987. Original partners Doris Kornish & Phil Hartman (indie filmmakers who loved Cajun food and culture – Phil having opened the Great Jones Café, a Cajun juke joint, in 1983), teamed up with local developer John Touhey, to create the original Two Boots Restaurant, a family-friendly, full-service restaurant specializing in Cajun-Italian cooking. The immediate success of Two Boots can be traced to a slew of small miracles: we inherited beautiful, indestructible terrazzo floors from the long-gone Red Lantern Restaurant; our vintage nail-head chairs were a last-minute find on The Bowery; our lovely pink and green tabletops were a black market score from a vintage formica dealer (thank you Suzanne of Second Hand Rose!). The Two Boots menus were graced with illustrations from the illustrious George Schneeman; our store managed by the amazing Lynn Loflin of Monroe, Louisiana; our pizza station manned by rock stars Santo Fazio and Kevin Karam; our bar and floor run by man-myth Kirby and brother Jesse Hartman, who’d go on to fame with Sammy and Laptop; and our core servers broke all kinds of restaurant records for durability and devotion — five years together as a group in a high-turnover industry! — thank you Emily Spray, Marilyn Gold, Darya Panesoff, Lisa Bowman, Mary Hebert and Jessica Gandolf. It definitely took this entire village to raise our restaurant.

Check out their menu here.

From a press release:

“Join Red Wolf Imports and winemaker Charl Coetzee as they debut South Africa’s Babylonstoren wines in the District with a five-course, wine-pairing dinner at Dino’s Grotto in Shaw on October 18, 2016.

South African wine production is experiencing a generational shift with enthusiastic new producers and young winemakers pushing the boundaries of the formerly domestically-focused industry. Their wines tell the story of South Africa’s diverse climates and soils, while simultaneously setting the course for its future. Babylonstoren is at the forefront of this charge. (more…)

A reader reports:

“Bad Saint expansion? I saw some construction workers moving in and out of the space next to Bad Saint (formerly a hair salon I believe) this morning. The space looked totally gutted and ready for renovation. How exciting would this be??!”

Back in February 2014 Bad Saint’s owner told us that an expansion into a neighboring space on 11th Street was likely. Looks like those plans are moving forward and it’s no surprise given the slew of accolades they’ve been receiving. Given some of the lines we’ve seen this is a very very good thing! Updates as construction progresses.

Update: Sadly, owner Nick Pimentel says no expansion at this time.

From Little Coco’s:

“Monday is a big day at Coco’s! We’re finally opening for coffee and homemade pastries – cream puffs, donuts, muffins, scones – starting at 8am. Our espresso is from La Colombe and drip coffee from Ceremony.

Lunch will start at 11:30 and include pizza, sandwiches (my favorite is the P.L.T. – Porchetta, Lettuce and Tomato on homemade Focaccia), and salads.

Then, starting at 4pm it’s Pizza night. Just $9 for any pie and $30 for a pizza and a pitcher! Every Monday.

In yesterday’s discussion about the new Hilton brothers’ bars coming to Logan Circle, ExWalbridgeGuy commented:

“Whyy is everything a boring bar?
Here’s 10 restaurants.
Whyy is everything small plates?
Here’s 10 places to get entrees.
Whyy isn’t every thing cheap?
Here’s 10 cheap places.
Whyyyy is everything the same?
Here’s 10 different cuisines from all around the world.
Whyyy is it all just bars and restaurants. I want something different!
Okay, fine, here’s a completely off-the-wall idea that’s cheap food and arcade games and billiards and…
Whyy is it so unusual. I hate it!”

So what the hell, let’s just say it straight – in a perfect but realistic world (ie rent has to be paid) how would you describe the restaurant/bar that you’d like to see open near where you live?
