Last week I wrote about a new Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Viet, Coming to 14th Street in Columbia Heights. In the comments we heard it was going to be near Parkwood. This past weekend I was lucky enough to walk by and catch one of the owners, (sadly/stupidly I didn’t catch her name). At any rate, it will be located at 3515 14th Street, NW (pictured above) just south of Parkwood and next to the Cavalier liquor store. As you can tell it is not a huge space but the owner was super enthusiastic. She said the restaurant hopes to open at the end of September or early October. Can’t wait to check it out!

A commenter noted the for sale sign in the window and I went to check it out this weekend. Sadly it is true. Burritos Fast which Tina checked out a while back, located at 3213 Mount Pleasant St NW, is for sale. Unfortunately the woman at the store who I spoke with couldn’t speak English and I can’t speak Spanish. I don’t know if this happens to you but my foreign language is French so when someone can’t speak English I automatically revert to French. Though I spoke it with a Spanish accent. Anyway, when I asked why the store was closing, the best answer I could get was “dinero”. This is pretty sad news. I know there were a lot of fans out there so you should stop by soon before they are sold.

I’m told that Tynan Coffee & Tea located on Irving Street just west of 14th St., NW is about “half way done”. You can also see that they’ve applied for a liquor license.

Chipotle coming to 3113 14th Street, NW begins its build out Monday!

I along with many others (based on the emails I’ve received) have eagerly been anticipating the opening of Columbia Heights’ newest restaurant. I’m happy to announce that Social will open this Saturday! The bar opens at 4pm and dinner service begins at 6pm. I showed a sneak preview of the spot here. I was lucky enough to attend a mock service on Thursday evening. I gotta say, the food was amazing and the vibe was phenomenal. My overall feeling was that this is going to be a great date spot. Since so many new restaurants have recently opened up what is hard to articulate is what makes one really great. All I can say is that the vibe is what makes a new spot great. It’s what makes the recently opened wine bar Room 11 great and it’s what makes the nearby Red Derby great. Vibe is essential and thankfully Social has it in spades. But you’ll have to judge for yourself. The idea of various sized plates to share worked perfectly. And the fact that the place looks great doesn’t hurt either. I’m psyched to hear what you guys think of the place.

Tackle Box is located at 3245 M St., NW. I’m a huge fan of lobster and was excited to see a sign here for lobster rolls. You can see the whole menu here but the lobster rolls go for $19. So my questions are: How is the lobster roll? Any other items of note? Is $19 too expensive for a lobster roll? Any other spots in DC to get a lobster roll? What’s your overall impression of this place – thumbs up or down?

Back in Dec. ’08 we looked at G2 when it was a deli. There was always supposed to be a lounge upstairs, but various permitting issues delayed the opening. It appears that those issues have now been taken care of. I spoke with owner, Sampson who has owned the building 3 years, who told me that he hopes to open this coming Saturday. The downstairs, formerly a Blimpie’s before it was a deli, will now be a restaurant featuring a potpourri of cuisines including Mexican, Italian, Ethiopian and American fare. There will also be tvs where you can watch sporting events.

The upstairs will house the lounge. I think it looks pretty good.

In addition to a regular lounge there will special event evenings including Jazz night, Ethiopian music, Latino music, and an open mic night including comedy. I think this has the potential to be pretty sweet. I’d love to check out some Ethiopian music. I can see that being very, very cool.

Couple more photos of the lounge after the jump. (more…)
