I’ll admit I was very skeptical when I first heard about plans for a Jewish Deli combined with an Irish Tavern. Well, Star & Shamrock located at 1341 H Street, NE really impressed me. The space is quite comfortable with a huge bar, plenty of tables and tvs:

As a proud American Jew originally from New York who also drinks a lot of whiskey I feel especially qualified to give a huge thumbs up to this place. Even the latkes were good! Sadly I didn’t get to try any deli sandwiches but I have very high hopes.

As I mentioned yesterday, thanks to all those who wrote in, the new Pica Taco located at 1406 Florida Ave, NW just had it’s grand opening. This whole week you can buy one taco get one free. And I’ll echo the sentiment of some readers – the space looks great:

Thanks to all the readers who sent word (and photos) of the flyer that recently went out. The Pica Taco is located at 1406 Florida Ave, NW (just west of 14th) in the old LZ Restaurant space. Grand opening On Sunday April 18th through Saturday April 24th, buy one taco, get a second one free.

Acqua Al2 is coming to 212 7th Street, SE by Eastern Market. This will be the third restaurant after the original in Florence and the first expansion into San Diego. You can see their current menus here. As a lover of Italian food I’m super excited to try them out soon.

By chance, has anyone eaten at that San Diego location?

Dickson Wine Bar, located at 903 U St, NW has now been open for over a month and I’m wondering what are people’s initial impression? After only being open for a month they’ve gotten lots of good reviews on Yelp. How do they compare to Cork, Vinoteca, Room 11 and the others? For those who have been was there much of a wait for a table/seat?

“Dear PoP,

On Sunday night I noticed that the windows were covered up with brown paper. This morning the establishment appears to be closed for good.

It was a greasy spoon/falafel shop that was open late nights on weekends and mornings on weekdays. It had been around as long as I could remember. I’ve lived in the area for 23 years. The address is 1408 U Street, NW.

Their hours had been becoming erratic lately. On some mornings they were not open for breakfast. This was surprising, given that 24/7’s weekday customers were mostly Reeves Center employees. It never was open 24/7.”

Wow, this is pretty big news as I remember there were tons of fans of this place. When I walked by there wasn’t anyone I could ask to find out if they are closed for good or simply remodeling. Anyone here happen to know?

Folks were big fans of this place, weren’t they? I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available.

Pret a Manger is set to open up at the corner of 11th and F Streets, NW relatively soon (Web site says mid-May). You can see their menu here. I’m wondering how this place compares to other sandwich shops like Au Bon Pain etc. Anyone every been to the 18th and Eye location (or one of the NYC locations)?

Rasika is located at 633 D Street, NW. I believe it is generally considered one of the best Indian restaurants in the city. The reviewers on Yelp certainly give high ratings. What do you guys think – is this the best Indian food in town? Any must order dishes?

This new restaurant nearing opening is looking awesome. I had the good fortune to run into their chef, Robert Wood, who let me snap photos. The Chesapeake Room is located at 501 8th Street, SE on Barrack’s Row.

And here’s a big scoop – the fish tank is getting filled with fish on Tuesday:

Seriously, the place does look amazing. Chef Wood said that they are likely to open in the first week of May and they are finalizing the menu. He did say that 30% of the menu would stay the same while 70% changed with the seasons. He is also aiming to keep the majority of the ingredients within 250 miles of DC. I’m can’t wait to try this place out when they open.
