Petite Gourmet was located at 224 7th Street, SE by Eastern Market. A recent liquor license application says the place, Boxcar, will be:

“Classic American Bistro with recorded music. No Live Entertainment. Sidewalk Cafe with 12 seats. Seating capacity is 75. Total occupancy load is 99.”

Were there any fans of Petite Gourmet?

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up. This’ll be another nice addition for lunch options downtown. Back in July ’10 a Pret a Manger opened up a block away at 11th and F St, NW.

You can see Le Pain Quotidien’s menu here. I’ll update when doors open at the 10th and F St, NW location.

Ed. Note: Le Pain Quotidien has also recently opened up a new location at 800 17th Street NW near Farragut Square.

From a press release:

James Beard Award–winning Chef RJ Cooper will open Rogue 24, a 52-seat urban fine dining restaurant in Washington, D.C., on July 27. The open kitchen, situated in the middle of the dining room, serves as the centerpiece of a “theater in the round” interactive dining experience. Guests will choose from the 16-course Progression menu or the 24-course Journey menu as a map to guide their culinary experience with Chef Cooper and his team of artisans.

“Rogue 24 is both a studio and stage for dedicated culinarians and sommeliers to have an immediate impact on guests with their knowledge and commitment to excellence,” said RJ Cooper, Chef/Owner, Rogue 24. “For guests seeking an intimate dining experience, we’ve turned the traditional restaurant inside out and brought the kitchen to the guests. Each table is a chef’s table, and each course is carefully constructed to build upon the flavors of the previous course, guiding the taste buds on an unexpected journey.”

Continues after the jump. (more…)

WaPoFood tweeted:

“Kaz Okochi of Kaz Sushi Bistro opens a small maki roll shop tomorrow, OhFish!, on 19th Street btw L & M.”

The exact location is 1899 L St, NW next to the Chop’t.

Washingtonian earlier reported:

The ordering process at Oh Fish! is quite similar to Subway: first, pick your roll size (eight fat rolls or skinny ones with less rice) then a protein (options include spicy tuna, eel, and crispy shrimp); and finally three veggie fillings (think avocado, kimchi, cilantro, and pickled pineapple). The basic price, $6.50 to $9, includes sauces—which range from familiar (spicy mayo) to less-traditional (spicy tomato)—and such toppings as crunchy rice balls and sesame seeds. Other garnishes—jalapeño masago, for example—as well as sides, such as edamame and seaweed, salad are extra. Indecisive customers can pick from seven pre-designed creations such as the “suki suki” with shrimp salad, avocado, citrus-soy sauce, and crispy panko crumbs.

Sounds awesome. We’ll def. revisit for a proper judging but sounds like this has the potential to be a great lunch option.

Last week a reader mentioned that they had heard Rajaji, located at 2603 Connecticut Ave NW, might be closing soon but when I went in to get confirmation – they denied that they were closing. Just in case I figure now is a good time to get a judging in. You can see their menus here.

I had no idea they’ve been open since 1969.

Any fans?

Former Porter’s space to become Irish Whiskey

Back in Jan. ’11, I wondered what was going on with this section of 19th St, NW just north of M Street. Sounds like it is back on track. The old Porter’s space at 1207 19th St, NW is going to become Irish Whiskey and the old Penang space 1837 M Street NW (just above the Chipotle) is going to become a Boqueria.

From a press release:

Boqueria, a popular contemporary tapas restaurant with two successful New York City locations, has signed a lease with Grosvenor Americas for 5,331 square feet of space at 1837 M St., NW in Washington, DC. Moving into the space formerly occupied by Penang Malaysian Cuisine, Boqueria plans to open in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Grosvenor Americas also has leased the adjacent 3,815 SF space at 1207 19th Street, NW to Irish Whiskey, which will take over the space formerly occupied by Porters Dining Saloon. A new concept from the owners of a nearby bar, The Mighty Pint, Irish Whiskey will be a “traditional public house” with a large selection of Irish whiskeys, unique beers, and Irish/American food.

“Grosvenor Americas is pleased to facilitate Boqueria’s expansion into Washington, DC,” said Perry C. Reith, Senior Asset Manager, Grosvenor Americas. “We are confident that Boqueria’s contemporary yet casual small plates concept will be as popular in the Golden Triangle as it is in New York City. Boqueria and its new neighbor, Irish Whiskey, will provide new social venue alternatives in this popular area just south of DuPont Circle.”

“Washington, DC is an exciting and bustling food town and we are honored to join the ranks of the city’s operators and restaurants,” said Boqueria owner Yann de Rochefort. (For more information, see www.boquerianyc.com.)
