Back in Feb. I shared the news that the PORC food truck was opening a brick and mortar restaurant in Columbia Heights in the old Aquario space at 3412 11th St, NW (next to Meridian Pint.) Yesterday they released the name via email:

Kangaroo Boxing Club to Open in Columbia Heights

Brought to you by the founders of popular food truck, Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (PORC), Josh Saltzman and Trent Allen; along with fellow U of Michigan alum Chris Powers and DC-native Peyton Sherwood.

Set to open this spring (or early summer, depending), the new neighborhood bar and restaurant, Kangaroo Boxing Club, will offer brick-and-mortar versions of popular PORC offerings and other unique KBC selections.

Kangaroo Boxing will be the establishment everyone wishes for their own neighborhood. A nice relaxed atmosphere, quality and consistent menu options and a solid selection of beer and wine. KBC will be located at 3412 11th St. NW in Columbia Heights, next door to Meridian Pint.

The name, Kangaroo Boxing Club, comes from long-running, drink-infused, late-night bar discussions on the fact that, without technology, man is physically unable to compete with the majority of the animal kingdom. How would you win a match with a kangaroo?

The Capital City Diner closed in late Jan. 2012 and was listed for sale on ebay in early March. Yesterday, the Post reported:

“owner Matt Ashburn says he’s close to a deal to sell the historic diner to a group that would keep it in the District — apparently not far from its original site in the Trinidad neighborhood.”

I suppose Trinidad isn’t too far from Petworth/Columbia Heights once the extensive Streetcar grid is in place. Anyway, a reader sends word of potentially life altering news, for me, about the new location. And perhaps, for some, even better than the new location is the new vision – “Kosher-style Jewish deli sandwiches” and “a rooftop outdoor patio featuring a tiki bar”!

Check out this Craigslist ad Cooks, servers, manager wanted for 24hr diner (Petworth/Columbia Hgts):

“EXPERIENCED SERVERS & COOKS!!!!! New 24 hour diner being moved to Columbia Heights/Petworth seeking experienced cooks & servers for all shifts / full or part time. We purchased a classic silver diner car will move it to the CoHi/Petowoth area. We plan to be open by August 1, and are seeking experienced persons to help open this exciting venture.

We plan to seat appx 75, with a rooftop outdoor patio featuring a tiki bar. Food will be classic diner fare, with Asian fusion. Menu will prominently feature Kosher-style Jewish deli sandwiches, with bread baked fresh every morning.”

Another Passover/Easter miracle in the making?

Back in Jan. 2012 we heard that a new pizza spot was coming to 467 Florida Ave, NW. After getting the heads up from a reader I stopped by yesterday and indeed Pizzarro is open for business. Currently they have pizza, calzones, paninis, pastas and salads. They also deliver within a 2 mile radius (unfortunately their Website is still a few weeks away.) Most prices on the menu range from between $7-$12. Though the gourmet pizzas are priced: $14.99 for a medium, $17.49 for a Large and $19.59 for an extra large.

In the future they’ll also offer crepes, coffee and free wifi.

Looks like pizza and coffee are trending on Florida Ave.

Yesterday a reader tweeted the photo above and asked:

@PoPville do u know whats going in beside Belga on 8th St SE?”

Back in Nov. 2010 we learned that Capitol Video Sales was closing at 514 8th Street, SE and a new restaurant called Pacifico would open in the space. From their liquor license application:

“New Restaurant, Latin tapas, open grill, salads and contemporary cooking with recorded music.
Seating Capacity is 120. Total occupancy load including Summer Garden is 185. Sidewalk Café with seating for 30.”

Looks like they’ll have a great roof deck too. This is another restaurant from Xavier Cervera who also owns Lola’s Barracks Bar & Grill, Molly Malone’s, the Chesapeake Room, Senart’s Oyster & Chop House, Boxcar Grill, the currently being renovated Hawk n Dove, and the Park Tavern restaurant coming to Navy Yard.

Nov. 2010

M Cafe is coming to 1634 14th St, NW in the new Aston Condos. A liquor license application says:

“New Italian Bistro serving contemporary Italian cuisine. Sidewalk Café with 56 seats. Seating Capacity of 96 and Total Capacity is 119.”

It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to Posto located nearby at 1515 14th St. NW.

UPDATE: Thanks to a commenter for sharing their Website anticipating a September 2012 opening. You can see their menus here.

More good news for Shaw. Washingtonian reports:

“…the neighborhood spot will have a lineup of casual fare projected onto the wall so changes can be made if dishes run out or new ingredients arrive. The concept is hyper-seasonal: At dinner you could find a dish like frog’s legs with porcini gnocchi one day, and lamb loin the next, while lunch will focus on sandwiches and salads.”

From a press release:

Known for their modern twist to Chinese small-plate cuisine, Ping Pong Dim Sum in Chinatown and Dupont Circle is offering another reason to gather around the table with the launch of the ‘SUM’down Open Bar.

An ideal after-work cocktail destination, customers can enjoy bottomless drinks every Tuesday from 7:00PM to 11:00PM for two hours. Guests can enjoy a variety of special cocktails such as a lychee & rose martini or a vanilla & chili sidecar, as well as a featured selection of beer, wines, and champagnes while nibbling on edamame throughout the night, for $25.

The folks at Ping Pong Dim Sum were kind enough to give away a free taste to a party of four from PoPville. Ping Pong Dim Sum is located at 900 7th St, NW in Chinatown and 1 Dupont Circle NW.

Just let me know why you want to go in the comments and I’ll pick the winner Friday.

Dear PoPville,

Any news on Shaw’s Tavern? They have an ABRA hearing poster that says their hearing was supposed to be on the 12th, but they sure aren’t serving alcohol still, and nothing on ABRA’s website that I could find. When I asked them, they said they are still “going back and forth.”

Hmm, last week they tweeted:

“Dear Friends, Please mind our new operation hours: Mon-Fri: 8am-4pm Sat & Sun: 9am-4pm”

Anyone else hear an update?

We recently judged their brunch here.

Shaw’s Tavern is located at 520 Florida Ave, NW.
