Yesterday we spoke about those continuing to have difficulty getting DMV appointments.
From the Mayor’s Office:
“This week, the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) extended the time residents have to renew expired driver licenses and identification (ID) cards to September 9, 2021. The previously announced deadline was July 1, 2021. This action, as well as other changes DC DMV is making, will give residents more time to renew driver licenses and other ID cards that require an in-person appointment at a DMV Service Center.
This announcement does NOT impact the enforcement of valid inspections and vehicle registrations that took effect on June 1, 2021.
In-person service at all DC DMV service centers, adjudication services, and the Deanwood CDL Office is still by appointment only. DC DMV will continue to offer more appointments and other options to ensure all residents have a chance to be in compliance with their credentials before the September 9, 2021 deadline. The ddot website leads to a broken link and the last time Popville visited this was back in May 13 in regards to a system that won’t be live until July 1; what are we supposed to do in the meatime?”

“DC DMV has added parallel parking to the road skills test at our Deanwood Center. Parallel parking is a necessary driving skill and is essential to protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and property. It is an important skill to learn and does require practice. (more…)

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans for a new two-way cycle track on the east side of 9th Street NW, adding a 1.6 mile protected bike lane connecting Florida Avenue/U Street NW to the north and Pennsylvania Avenue to the south.
“This project will make our city safer and travel Downtown more accessible,” said Mayor Bowser. “With the 9th Street cycle track we are improving DC’s infrastructure to make it safer, more sustainable, and more efficient for everyone who travels through this corridor.”
A new 9th Street NW protected bike lane will significantly expand safe bicycling infrastructure on the eastern side of downtown. Ten percent of all trips originating in the Shaw neighborhood are by bicycle, more than double the average bike trips District-wide. The bike lane will provide a critical north-south connection for cyclists to downtown, in an area that does not currently have any designated bike lanes. (more…)

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined residents to kick off the District’s outdoor pool season with the “Jump in, DC” celebratory event and cut the ribbon on the renovated and rechristened Woody Ward (formerly Benning Park) Recreation Center. The Mayor also announced Washington, DC regained its #1 spot as the top ranked park system in the country by The Trust for Public Land.
“DC is ready for summer and all the joy and DPR programming that it brings. We are especially excited that this summer we can reopen our pools and spray parks,” said Mayor Bowser. “We know that – because we invest in them and prioritize them – DC has fantastic outdoor spaces, playgrounds, and recreation centers. We’re happy to receive recognition for our park system, and even happier to deliver facilities like Woody Ward to our residents.”
DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) outdoor pools and spray parks will open Saturday, May 29, and remain open through Monday, May 31. Pools will operate on a weekend-only schedule (Saturday and Sunday) through Sunday, June 27. Starting Monday, June 28, all outdoor pools will operate on individual summer schedules, six days a week, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. All DPR spray parks open Saturday, May 29 and operate daily thereafter, from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. DPR’s aquatic inventory includes 18 outdoor pools, 11 indoor pools, 33 spray parks and three children’s pools. The newly renovated, $11 million Woody Ward Recreation Center is a two-story building with an outdoor pool and 24,000 square-feet of exterior and interior improvements. (more…)

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces the completion of construction of a new red-light enforcement camera at the Interstate 695 off ramp (ramp D) at Northbound 11th Street SE. This automated traffic enforcement camera will be installed to reduce the number of angle collisions, red light running, and improve overall safety at the intersection. The camera will be activated June 7.
In addition to the red-light camera, DDOT will rotate seven new speed cameras to reduce dangerous, reckless driving in the following corridors: (more…)

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented her Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) Budget and Financial Plan to the Council of the District of Columbia as part of the District’s annual budget process. The Fair Shot Budget makes significant investments to provide relief, recovery, and growth for residents and businesses across all eight wards, focusing on the pillars of an equitable recovery: access to safe and affordable housing, high-quality job training, healthy neighborhoods, academic acceleration and increased access to quality child care, programs to reduce gun violence, safe and accessible transportation options, and supports for businesses and residents hit hardest by the economic crisis of the past year and a half.
“The sacrifices of our community over the past year and a half have saved lives and gotten us to where we are today – on the cusp of crushing this virus. The Fiscal Year 2022 Fair Shot Budget honors those sacrifices by making big investments in residents and businesses that were hit the hardest and setting our community up for a strong recovery,” said Mayor Bowser. “With this budget, we are doubling down on our commitment to build a more equitable Washington, DC and giving more Washingtonians a fair shot.”

“Today, Mayor Bowser and DC Health announced upcoming changes to the District’s walk-up vaccination sites, many that go into effect during the last week of June. As adjustments are made to the public vaccination sites, residents are reminded that the COVID-19 vaccines continue to be free at pharmacies, clinics, and health care centers across DC. Residents can find the closest available vaccination location at vaccines.gov or by texting their zip code to GETVAX (438829) in English, or VACUNA (822862) in Spanish.
Additionally, residents are reminded that Friday, May 28 will be the last day of operations for the COVID-19 testing site at Judiciary Square. (more…)
