“Dear PoPville,

I’m a DCPS educator in Columbia Heights, where the side streets, alleys, and sidewalks are still icy and largely uncleared from yesterday’s storm. As per usual, there’s no word on what tomorrow will hold for teachers and students.

I’m hoping other educators, families and community members can help us call on DCPS to make 2 hour delay or school cancellations by 7:00 PM so parents and educators can plan childcare and commutes instead of scrambling at dawn.

From the office of the DC Attorney General:

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb, along with Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, Maryland Secretary of State Susan Lee, and former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, today announced that two fraudulent nonprofits, Maryland Youth Club of America, Inc. (Maryland Youth Club) and Virginia Youth Club of America, Inc. (Virginia Youth Club), will permanently shut down and that their founder, Jule Huston, as well as other officers and directors, are banned from doing any business or soliciting charitable donations in the District. Huston is also barred from forming a charity or soliciting charitable donations in Maryland and Virginia, and from serving as an officer or director of any Maryland or Virginia charitable corporation.

The settlements resolve a joint investigation by the Attorneys General of DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and the Maryland Secretary of State, which uncovered evidence that Maryland Youth Club and Virginia Youth Club recruited school-age children from low-income neighborhoods to sell candy door-to-door, telling people that the proceeds would fund scholarships and enrichment activities for at-risk kids, when in fact the adults running the program illegally used the funds for their own personal benefit. From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA), and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced that District Government reached a major milestone in its commitment to a safe and regulated cannabis market: the District’s 100th illegal cannabis business closure since enforcement closures began in September 2024. On January 1, 2026, ABCA and MPD shuttered and padlocked an illegal cannabis business that had been operating out of a private residence on B Street SE. These enforcement actions affirm the Bowser Administration’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting the health and safety of DC residents. (more…)

From the office of Councilmember Christina Henderson:

“Councilmember Henderson introduced the E911 Modernization Amendment Act of 2025. The bill would enhance resources for the District’s emergency response telecommunications system, with the goal of creating a safer and more responsive public safety system.

“Each year, the Office of Unified Communications (OUC) handles hundreds of thousands of emergency and non-emergency calls which are supported through the District’s Emergency and Non-Emergency Number Telephone Calling Systems Fund,” said Councilmember Henderson. “While this fund has provided a critical foundation for OUC, across the country jurisdictions are transitioning to Next Generation 911 (NG911), which enables voice, text, photos, video, and precise geolocation. These capabilities are essential for ensuring residents can reach emergency services using communication methods they rely on every day and require our 911 services to evolve to match the pace of the nation.”

The proposed legislation would modernize 911 and 311 telecommunication systems, helping the District remain a leader in emergency response technology and service delivery by ensuring critical upgrades that require dedicated funding are met.

Specifically, the E911 Modernization Amendment Act of 2025 would: (more…)

From the Office of the D.C. Auditor:

“This newest report from the Office of the D.C. Auditor found that ANC 8C Chair Salim Adofo used $2,225 for partisan political activities, and an additional $2,535 in personal services spending lacked documentation to support whether it was for ANC use or for partisan political activity.

In addition, a total of $17,881 of the ANC’s expenditures could not be identified as allowable ANC expenses or did not comply with all legal requirements, including:

Whether eight payments 8C made to ANC 8C Chair Salim Adofo totaling $6,804 were reimbursements for ANC purposes or for partisan political activity.
ANC 8C awarded $4,000 in grants in FY 2022 that did not comply with all legal requirements.
