Storm Day +12 – Sidewalks of Shame and Trash Troubles Cont.

“Dear PoPville,

Annoying as hell that DC is still not shoveling the sidewalks around their own parking lots. 1st and E NW outside the district staff parking lot which has been plowed. Not a good look and really not safe. Literally the only street on the block that hasn’t been cleared:

NW between union station and judicary square. It’s across the street from the georgetown law school buildings, on the same block as cafe alice. 440 First Street NW is the closest address and this is literally the only uncleared sidewalk in the entire neighborhood but the whole lot is perfectly plowed for city employee vehicles.”

“Dear PoPville, (ed. note: many city officials also included in letter)

I am writing to you today to express my deep concern regarding the unacceptable conditions at the Langston Carver Housing Complex post the major storm on 1/25.

While I am not a resident of the complex, I walk through this area every day to take my daughter to school. It has now been more than 10 days since the recent storm, and the state of the grounds remains dire. Specifically, the piles of trash that have accumulated are not only unsanitary but pose significant bio-health risks and are an open invitation for rodents. It is truly a shame that residents are expected to live in these conditions. At the very least, having facilities staff clean up the spilled refuse would go a long way in demonstrating basic care for the area and respect for the people who live here.

Furthermore, the lack of snow and ice removal on the walkways continues to present a severe safety risk for all community members, particularly the many children and teenagers who must traverse this area to reach the various schools on “Education Hill.” Since schools were reopened, each day my daughter and I have to walk over small mountains of snow and ice. While we have snow boots, I notice that many other children do not. The Education Hill drop-off area on 24th St NE has barely been cleared, there is one very small path cleared.

I certainly understand that the entire city has been adversely affected by the storm, and I have noted minor improvements in snow clearing. However, the accumulation of trash—and specifically the trash that has spilled out across the area—is deeply concerning. The current situation is unacceptable. I’m looking forward to seeing a quick solution to these health and safety issues.”
