“Dear PoPville,

Harrassment on 7th Street in Shaw

I was riding my bike to work (I live at 6th and P and go down this block every day and never have issues) and a guy was crossing P street in the middle of the street. When he saw me he starting running after me on my bike screaming “bitch” and reached out to shove me off of my bike but I swerved and he missed. Then he started chasing me and I had to run through the light on 7th and P to get away.

It isn’t the same man I don’t think from the other posts (I think I know which one that is). This guy looked to be late 20’s/young 30s, facial hair and was wearing a red jersey and flat billed hat with dark jeans.

I am sad to hear about so many incidents here, it’s just around the corner from my house and haven’t really heard about any problems until this summer.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last night I was eating outside at a restaurant on Barracks Row. At around 9:30, the women at the table next to mine — in the next restaurant over — had an iPhone snatched from their table by someone running by on the sidewalk. It happened so fast, but a man chatting with the women (who we later were told was that restaurant’s manager) took off like lightning, chasing them down the street at a full clip. Before we left, the women told us he had actually caught them and that the police were there now (we did see two police vehicles drive down the block a few minutes after the incident). Well done on the manager’s part, for sure, but I mostly write this as a reminder so people will know to put away not only their purses and bags from easy reach, but also their phones.”

“Dear PoPville,

Tuesday night some thieves tried to steal my scooter from right in front of my house on Sherman Ave, between Harvard and Columbia. While heading to work the next morning I noticed the cover was all disheveled. I took a look inside and my glovebox was left open (I leave it unlocked and empty for exactly this scenario). I thought that was it, but then when I went to unlock my chain I noticed it had been largely cut through. The heavy gauge of the chain along with the U-lock saved it from getting stolen, though obviously I have to replace my chain and change the lock just in case.

I wanted to reach out for two reasons. One, scooter enthusiasts – always use a chain and lock and cover, and leave your glovebox unlocked and empty overnight. It’ll save you from having your glovebox lock broken. Two, is this even worth reporting to the police? The citizen in me feels like I should, so that the numbers are on record and something might be done about it, but the DC resident in me feels like it will be a massive waste of time and the cops will tell me to go pound sand.

Thoughts?”

What the hell is going on today…

A reader reports:

“Walking down an alley [between Seaton and T] in Bloomingdale yesterday I got asked directions by a man who then tried to grab the family jewels. He’s thin, six foot, tan skin (Hispanic, Mediterranean, Italian, etc), short cropped hair, purple button down, olive green pants. Thought other folks in the area might be warned.”

Georgia and Lamont St, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to make sure that you post about the robbery at gunpoint that occurred a little after 11 in the 700 block of Lamont street, It is on MPD Twitter. Anyway this is the same block that we have been hearing complaints about for the past few weeks, hell on Monday there was a crime walk, last night a meeting with ANC rep Bobby Holmes and reps from the 3rd and 4th district that was to a degree a little disappointing. While patrols, or really a cop just stationed at that corner and the shutting down of the drug house across the street on Lamont, have at least given the corner the appearance of not being so shitty, I guess that is pretty much all for nothing, because Robbery Gun point is about the worst thing I can recall in a while happening here in a while.

Anyway, while I don’t speak for everyone, I think many felt that the fact that these three blocks south of the park road substation are so crappy is really pretty embarrassing, and I think many of us at least get the sense that it has to do with the border being drawn where it is and the way that effects policing. Anyway at this point I am just pissed.

The sheer amount of criminal activity at this corner and in the alleys immediately east and west of it is staggering and yet even when we raise a pretty good stink they can’t keep it safe one night after the stink? It sucks for the neighborhood, I would particularly hate to be in the lofts at this point and it is a total embarrassment for MPD. I could vent forever but I am sure you get my point, please, please, please post something about this, it is ridiculous.”

From the Washington Post:

“A pregnant woman biking home from work was stabbed Tuesday afternoon near Congressional Cemetery in Southeast Washington.

The victim said she does not know what the man’s intentions were — perhaps he was trying to steal her backpack, she said…. and just moved to the District from Hawaii about a month ago.”
