and

“On today’s date [Sunday] at approximately 5:45 pm, First District officers assigned to High Visibility Patrol duties observed suspicious activities and subsequently conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at 9th and Maryland Avenue NE. At that time, they conducted an on-scene investigation and recovered a .45 caliber handgun. Officers arrested Mr. Dell Adams (57) of Southeast, Washington, D.C. charging him with felony weapon violations. As our work continues, it is disturbing, but yet pleasing to remove another illegal firearm from our city and our communities.

As the MPD remains committed to combat these street crimes, it is incumbent upon us all to remain vigilant of our surroundings and take precautions to protect our persons and secure our valuables from persons seeking to capitalize on our vulnerabilities. Please stay safe and be smart!”

Not sure what universe I was in when I missed this one but thanks to a reader for sending: “I’m sort of dying to see what PoPville makes of this.” The MPD video is down but it’s been posted here and is pretty messed up. NBC Washington reported the victim said:

“I was assaulted sexually,” he said, asking that his name be withheld. “I felt 100 percent violated. I felt really humiliated also, because when someone is just grabbing your body parts without your permission, no matter who it is, that’s just a violation completely.”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit have announced an arrest has been made in a Third Degree Sexual Abuse offense, which occurred in the 1700 block of New York Avenue, Northeast on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at approximately 4:00 pm.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 22-year-old Ayanna Marie Knight of Las Vegas, NV was arrested and charged with Third Degree Sexual Abuse, after officers from the First District were alerted to her location by an observant pedestrian.”

From MPD Saturday Night:

“First and foremost: THIS IS NOT AN ACT OF TERRORISM or any way related to the acts of terrorism in France.

This evening at approximately 8:15 PM, members of the First Police District responded to 701 1st Street NE for the report of shooting within Union Station involving an off duty law enforcement officer. Upon our arrival, we located an adult male subject suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was treated briefly on the scene and transported to a local area hospital where he is in surgery now under police guard.

A second individual was discovered with a gunshot wound to ankle and was transported to a local area hospital, conscious and breathing, where she was treated and released. A third individual was located suffering from a facial wound and was also transported to a local area hospital, conscious and breathing, where she was treated and released.

During the course of our preliminary investigation, it was discovered that an off duty police officer, employed by a law enforcement agency in the state of Maryland, observed a male subject stabbing a female inside Union Station and confronted the male armed with the knife. The male subject armed with the knife, was shot multiple times by the off duty police officer who discharged his weapon to neutralize this threat. During this discharge, a non-involved witness was struck and received an injury to her ankle.

This event was domestic related and the male armed with the knife and the female who received a facial wound knew each other and were related. This was not a random act of violence.

Should you have witnessed this event or have direct knowledge about the facts and circumstances, you are asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department on (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

Ed. Note: In September there was also a domestic incident where “A Special Police Officer shot the suspect” in Union Station.

A reader passes on from the MPD3D listserv:

“I write with a bit of a scary and disappointing update. My three-year-old and I were held up at knife point yesterday [Nov. 10th] as we left the Kennedy Recreation Center around 12:30 pm. We are fine, just shaken.

Based on my conversations with MPD over the last two days, I encourage you all to stay vigilant, take routes with a lot of foot traffic (I was on Marion, which is pretty quiet), and to minimize using your phone while you walk/keep your phone somewhere secure (this wasn’t my issue, but per MPD grabbed phones out of hands and strollers are the most common robberies with a child present).

I hope that no one takes this news as a reason to avoid Kennedy – I think we are safer and happier when everyone is out fully participating in our community.

MPD responded in part:

“…we have deployed the Crime Suppression Team to this area to investigate these numerous complaints. We are still actively looking into your concerns and our Third District Detective office is investigating the robbery that occurred on Tuesday.”

“Dear PoPville,

I witnessed an attack last night around 8pm on my walk home right by the Shaw metro, in the median between the library and the 7-11 on Rhode Island Ave. A group of teenagers came up behind another young man and took him down, then kicked him in the back and – this was the worst part- one of them savagely stomped his face. Then they kept walking toward the metro. A number of bystanders stayed around to help, call the police, and give statements. The victim was conscious and talking after a few minutes, but he didn’t seem to know his assailants. He said they took his bag as well. Police, emergency response, and an ambulance arrived fairly quickly and a cop called me a couple hours later to ask me to go over my statement again. They hadn’t caught the perpetrators yet.

It was scary to witness such casual violence. There was a lot of blood and I really hope the guy is okay. It’s a good sign that he was able to answer questions from the fire department guys.

Does anyone have tips for observing useful details when something like this happens? I felt so bad that I saw it happen but couldn’t have picked one of the people involved out of a lineup. It felt like it happened so fast and I couldn’t process what I’d seen quickly enough to get relevant identifying details. And I didn’t want to chase after the group as they sauntered away.”

Ed. Note: A reader recently wrote that the police advised them to look at the attacker’s shoes and provide a description of them.

A reader reports:

“A young man in his 20’s was assaulted at 8pm last night [Monday] at Kansas Ave & Quincy St. After stealing all his personal belongings, they ran up the 3800 block of Kansas Ave and west on Randolph St towards 14th St.

Not only is this disturbing because it happened so early in the evening when many of our families are still out and about, but it further illustrates the spike in crime in DC — especially near the Petworth metro and upper 14th St.

The young man was ok from what I understand, but was still at the hospital at the time of this email.

Update

He is doing well as I understand it. Very well liked in the neighborhood. Not seriously injured although he did sustain injuries. There is (another) community crime meeting to discuss this with MPD. Kid was 20 years old walking home from the Coupe at 8pm.

Community Meeting to Discuss Brutal Assault at Kansas Ave & Quincy St

Date: Thursday November 12, 2015
Time: 6:30 pm
Location: Raymond Recreation Center
3725 10th St NW”
