“Dear PoPville,
I was mugged half a block from my house on 13th St NW between Harvard and Girard on Sunday night at 5:40 pm. After the first robbery in August when my phone was stolen from me 2 blocks from home, I had bought a phone wrist strap to secure it to my wrist, which prevented the SECOND robbery in September from occurring when someone else tried to snatch it from me outside Smitty’s, a nearby bar where I was working on the weekends. The first two robberies occurred even earlier in the day than this one.
YES, this is the THIRD time I’ve been robbed in 3 months, and all have been in Ward 1.
This time, he ran up behind me and snatched the phone out of my hand. I had just taken it out to change the song because I was supposed to see Big Thief that night. (Heard it was a great show.) The wrist strap wouldn’t break so he shoved me hard to the ground until it broke. He started running away, and I started running after him (I KNOW, NOT SMART, but instinctual), and he turned around and punched me in the head. (more…)

Ed. Note: I realize that there have been numerous crime posts these last few days but I can’t pretend what is happening is not happening. I also don’t think we should normalize these events and pretend this is just part of “city living”. These events are horrible and must not be accepted as “normal”. One has every right to be angry and upset that they are happening. One should also recognize that solutions to these deep seated issues are not easy. Simply saying lock them up and throw away the key is not the answer. Doing nothing is not the answer either. If advocating for long term solutions there must also be interim actions to stem the violence that we are seeing. Hopefully there are those who will not pander but will work on genuine solutions that begin to ameliorate what we are seeing far too often.
Thanks to a reader for passing on this awful report from the Washington Blade:
“Three gay men were treated and released from a local hospital following a Halloween night attack on the 1400 block of P Street, N.W., in which an unidentified attacker “used homophobic language” while assaulting the men, according to a police report and a Facebook account of the incident by one of the victims. “Dear PoPville,
On Saturday, November 2nd around 3 PM, my partner was walking along Vermont Avenue NW between Q and R Street’s in Logan Circle. He was returning from Whole Foods with his backpack walking in an area considered safe right off Logan Circle. He was talking on his phone wearing Air Pods, the phone was not visible. One kid (high school aged) came up to him, asked for money which he did not give. He was then surrounded by a number of other kids and chased into the middle of the street where they started kicking him in the face and head. (more…)
