From MPD:

“On February 22, 2018 at approximately 12:43 A.M. in the 3600 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW, an MPD Mountain Bike unit observed an adult male suspect run up behind an adult male victim and punch him in the back of the head, causing him to fall. The suspect stated, “give me your wallet” and then removed a wallet from the victim’s pocket. Our MPD mountain bike unit quickly approached and grabbed the suspect and took him to the ground to detain him, immediately placing him under arrest. The victim sustained a minor cut to his lip and was treated on the scene by medics. The victim’s property was recovered.

Great job on the part of the mountain bike officer for actively patrolling on the beat and removing a violent criminal from the streets, thereby enhancing public safety.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to share a fantastic experience with Third District Police and Officer Perry Morgan Jr.

I had grabbed a Capital Bikeshare from the park at 3rd and Elm and only realized when I arrived home that I had left my fob and keys dangling in the original dock (what an idiot). Luckily I have an extra set in a lock box so was able to quickly throw on my running shoes and jog back over to try and recover them. Once there, it was clear the keys were gone and I turned to run back home empty handed. I then noticed a cop car idling next to the park and decided to make a last resort effort and asked Officer Morgan if anyone had turned in any keys, which unfortunately no one had. I again turned for the dejected jog home, when Officer Morgan called out and asked for my name and contact info. I gave the info to him with no expectation that I would ever see the keys again.

Astoundingly, about an hour later I got a phone call from Officer Morgan saying that he had been able to retrieve my keys from some kids that had found them and decided to take one of the bikes on a spontaneous, and likely indefinite joy, ride (of which I got email confirmation from Bike Share saying I had an open-ended trip past 30 minutes). Ecstatic, I asked where I could come pick them up, but he refused and insisted he would drop them off at my apartment. Shortly afterward, Officer Morgan had delivered my keys and explained that he and seen some kids hanging around the bike dock, found them nearby, and bartered with them for a pizza tomorrow (which he refused to allow me to pay for) if they managed to “find” my keys, which they managed to do in quick order. “Two police cars rolled up with lights flashing so we assumed there was trouble, but we were very happy to see that they had instead arrived to hand out treats. Props to the cops!”

From MPD Tuesday night:

“Today members of the First District Crime Suppression Team were on patrol early in the day on the look-out for package thieves in the Capitol Hill-East area and observed several suspicious acts.

At approximately 1108 AM, one officer encountered two men that seemed to be working together in the 400 block of 11th Street NE. The officer saw the two men walking through the block appearing to look into cars and he set up nearby to observe them for actual criminal behavior beyond the merely suspicious.

One of the two men then walked up to the building at 410 11th Street NE and sit down beside a large package. When the man opened the package, the lookout noticed the officer and the men fled in different directions. The package that was opened was left behind.

When fleeing the man discarded a hedge trimmer that he had either just stolen or had been carrying to reduce the suspicious nature of his behavior approaching homes. He also discarded a backpack containing a large silver foil “Prepared Meal Service” package such as SunBasket, HelloFresh, or BlueApron might send. Officers were unable to determine from which home he had stolen that meal service delivery. (more…)
