“Ahead of the Council of the District of Columbia’s first vote on the Fiscal Year 2021 Budget, Mayor Muriel Bowser urged the Council to seriously consider several key issues that are broadly problematic for sound budgeting and the operations of our government in the response and recovery from the pandemic and the recession it caused.
Among the concerns outlined by the Mayor in a letter sent to Chairman Phil Mendelson and members of the Council is the reduction in funding for the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Cadet Program, a very effective program that recruits and employs officers who are both from and familiar with DC neighborhoods and plays an important role in recruiting women and officers of color. Additionally, the Mayor highlights concerns with reducing the MPD budget by nearly $10 million, a reduction that would result in a level of sworn officers that has not been seen in DC since the 1990s, with seemingly no analysis on the impact this cut would have on the deployment of officers, officer response times to calls for service, and on community and neighborhood safety.

“Last night, members of the Fifth District Crime Suppression Team (CST) responded to a call for the sound of gunshots in the area 16th Street, NE and E Street, NE. Responding CST officers observed three individuals walking in the area, one of whom was displaying characteristics of armed gunmen. (more…)

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit have announced an arrest has been made in a First Degree Sexual Abuse and Robbery offense that occurred on Friday, January 27, 2006, in the 1900 block of 9th Street, Northwest.
At approximately 1:30 am, the suspect approached the victim at the listed location. The suspect brandished a handgun and took the victim’s property. The suspect then sexually assaulted the victim.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2020, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, 43 year old, Landrell Jordan of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with First Degree Sexual Abuse and Robbery.”

“On April 29, 2020, members of the Fifth District responded to a call for a shooting in the 900 block of 19th Street NE. Officers arrived quickly and were able to locate a car believed to be occupied by the suspects that was fleeing from the scene. Officers gave chase and pursued the car into the Sixth District where occupants fled on foot. Officers stopped and arrested 3 males, as well as recovered a semiautomatic handgun.
The case is being investigated by the Violent Crimes Branch. Anyone with information is asked to call (202)727-9099″

“On April 27, 2020, members of the Fifth District Crime Suppression Team were proactively patrolling the Eckington and Edgewood neighborhoods in relation to a number of recent offenses in the area. Members observed an SUV that was taken in an Armed Carjacking on April 25, 2020. As Officers approached the vehicle numerous subjects fled. In a combined effort patrol officers and Crime Suppression Officers were able to stop and identify the seven occupants of the SUV and recover a semi-automatic handgun, as well as the stolen SUV. “Dear PoPville,
Early this morning, around 8 am, I was walking my dog down U Street (near the intersection of Vermont Avenue). A guy walking in front of me slowed down, turned around and said good morning. He was very polite. I responded back, saying good morning. At that point, he reared back his leg and kicked my dog in the side, yelling expletives and shouting that “this is not a dog park!”. I responded by shouting back at him, but as he approached me, I realized engaging with him probably was not smart as I did not know what he was capable of or if he had a weapon. I turned around and walked away and he followed me, continuing to scream at me and my dog. As I tried to get away, I realized this was the habitual “dog kicker” that people talk about here on PoPville, so I figured it was best to get the police involved. (more…)
